New Delhi, January 15: Molesters beware, the government is considering to make the laws dealing with the social malaise stricter.

Women and Child Development Minister Renuka Chowdhary said her Ministry was examining the issue and government may come up with stricter laws and implementation mechanism to deal with cases of molestation.

The minister held a two-hour long meeting with her officials to discuss the Immoral Trafficking Act, misuse of Section 498-A of the IPC relating to dowry, laws dealing with molestation and fraudulent NRI marriages.

"We are examining the laws and the sole aim of the Ministry is to ensure implementation of these laws. The problem is with implementation. We want to ensure faster and hassle-free implementation of laws meant to serve women," Chowdhury said.

"In case of Mumbai molestation, I just would like to say that politicisation of the episode is uncalled for. Therefore I don't want to say anything on the issue. It would be better if people show little sensitivity while referring to it," she said.

On whether the Ministry has asked for a report on the incident, she said, "Yes we have asked for a detailed report in the case from Mumbai police because I want to know the whole truth."

She said the Ministry was also examining other laws concerning women, including those relating to fraudulent marriages.

"We are examining the whole gamut of law, keeping the interest and safety of women in mind. There are tricky situations, like a girl marries an NRI groom and later gets to know that he is already married," she said.

Not a moral degradtion by Tom on 16 Jan 2008

There is no clear evidence that crime has increased, reporting has increased or crime method has changed. Also moral is a personal thing. It should be used as guideline to judge own personal performance. It is hard to apply one's moral standards to others. This is simply law and order situation, mob mentailty, and dealing with unnatural restrictions by culture that is away from modern realities that leads to male frustration in society.

Renuka Chowdhuri wants to know truth-Molestation case by Col(ret)R.Aggarwala,Univ Faculty, USA(ret) on 16 Jan 2008

Madam Renuka Chowdhuri, if interested to know the whole truth, will also be well advised to serve the women better by advising and requiring them to indulge in better conduct themselves, a conduct that is expected from them. To avoid molestation, women should follow local morality values, to improve their own image and invite respect. For misuse of 498A, the women should also be given the same penalties that are prescribed for those who indulge in violation of dowry laws. Courts, including SC has severely criticized the laws regarding 498A, as these barbaric laws have resulted in destruction of well over 50000 innocent families through its misuse. No law should encourage such conduct. This is just simple commonsense.

Education to masses? It seems, both minister and public forgot of the incident happened in day-light and without the influence of drink in the following cases:1)Rape of woman, in Mumbai train.2)Priyadarshin Matoo rape by Santosh Yadav3)And many more similar cases in DelhiDoes, any one has whether it is lack of education or lack of morals? Is it the criminal who lacked these or whole system of law and order?Little common sense tells that it is complete failure of law and order and hence the blame squarely goes on police

Law and order by tom on 16 Jan 2008

If you believe in law and order then you should blame anybody. It is courts job. Now if you blame courts job. Courts do what govt say. Nd govt is elected by all including yourself. Blaming needs a much stronger and substantiated justification. It is a law and order problem but PPL are as much part of it as police is.

Solutions need to be found and implemented by Borun Chowdhury on 15 Jan 2008

I couldn't understand the title of the story. Who wants to know the whole truth ? And about what ? Anyways Ms. Chowdhury is right in that implementation is the issue. Infact a whole study has to be done as to what prompted the spontaneous event and at a socialogical scale what needs to be done to prevent it. Simple punishment is just the the first step. It has to extend to a real understanding of the root causes of the moral degradation. Ways need to be figured out for educating the masses and then all this needs to be implemented on a top priority basis.
