Mumbai Three of the six men accused of gangraping an American student at the prestigious social science institute, TISS, in Mumbai are still absconding even as the victim alleged that the police stationed at a state-run hospital where she underwent a medical check-up refused to help her.

The 23-year-old student pursuing a course at the Tata Insitute of Social Science (TISS) said she was traumatised when the police allegedly refused to help her at the hospital when she had tried to lodge a complaint, a day after the incident happened on April 11.

The student had gone to the Rajawadi hospital in suburban Ghatkopar to undergo medical tests.

"I was medically examined by a doctor there who then referred me to some police in the hospital. However the police did not help me out. I waited at the hospital for a long time but no police officer was ready to guide me," the victim has said in her statement to the police.

Police said three of the accused have been arrested and are due to be produced before a local court while the remaining three are still absconding.

The victim stated she was traumatised by the incident and thus refused to approach the police again.

"After speaking to my mother and friends, I felt supported and comfortable to come to the police station and register a complaint," the victim has said.

The victim, who hails from Idaho in the US, had come to India in October 2008 for a course in Gender and Development in TISS.

On April 11, the victim was gangraped by six men with whom she had gone to a night club in suburban Deonar and Andheri.

The six accused are - Vinamra Soni, Karan Singh, Harsh, Anish, Devshi and Kundan.

The victim was gangraped in the suburban Andheri home of Kundan where she was taken by the accused to rest. Prior to that, the victim and the accused had gone to a club in Deonar for partying. According to the victim's statement, she suspects that the accused might have spiked her drink in the bar to make her unconscious.

RAPES CASE by AASIM on 08 Jun 2009

THIS IS VERY BAD

Police behavior is atrocious by Raj on 17 Apr 2009

When such a thing happens to an Foreign national, it is very important that the Indian government agencies and officials take extra care that the affected person gets all the help. Thats critical for the good relationship with that foreign country. Because she is a foreign national, she will not know anybody in India, and her moral will be very bad, until she probably goes back to her home country or her familiy arrives to India. Police department should handle this very professionally rather than giving Indianized cultural advice that they used to provide to affected Indian victims.

this is our culture by jayanand on 17 Apr 2009

I am Indian, live in USA. I know the mentality of Indian youth, the usual thinking is that westerns are always ready for sx. A girl going to club with them means they are free to sleep with her. These guys should be punished hard to make an example.

Shameful by g kapuria on 16 Apr 2009

Every bit of this story is shameful. What happened to the high morals of Hinduism that have sustained us for so long? Why aren't our Swamijis coming out to help reform these wayward young people? We have always respected women, and treated our guests as sent by God. Second, we must change the ways of our police. The country must introduce laws that provide a mechanism for punishing the callous police officers. They must be made to understand that they are not little Napoleons, they exist to help citizens and guests.

Bars are dangerous for women by p.d on 16 Apr 2009

There was a hue and cry when the girls in Mangalore pub were asked to vacate the pub by Ram Sene. It has been observed that all the pubs and bar have become dangerous places for girls and women. The lecherous and politically well connected influential boys and men keep a watch on pretty girls and ladies. They use every method to hook on these girls/ladies. They lace the sedatives in the drinks and then blackmail these young girls to submission. Hundreds of cases have come to light. Indian girls are not like American girls (who was willing to lodge police complaint in spite of police apathy). The attitude of Police and law enforcing agencies is totally un-cooperative and apathetic. In fact police and law enforcing agencies including courts cast aspersions on these girls. There was only one state which was exception in the past and that was Rajasthan. In the light of the incident of rape of American citizen, I am sure that every right thinking person will support the action of Ram sene.

Wow! What warped logic! Instead of going after the perverts, go after innocent women! Its logic like these which justify crimes against women and poor people - basically people who cannot fight back
