Maharashtra ATS chief Hemant Karkare, Additional Commissioner Ashok Kamte and four others who lost their lives in the Mumbai carnage were among the 11 security personnel honoured with the highest peace time gallantry award.
Thousands of people including foreign invitees accoladed the supreme sacrifice of the security personnel as President Pratibha Patil presented the awards.
Kavita Karkare, widow of slain Maharashtra ATS chief Hemant Karkare who displayed raw courage and unparalleled leadership while fighting the Mumbai attackers, was virtually in tears while receiving the award and the President was seen consoling her.
A large number of people among the audience, including VIPs, rose from their seats when Kavita went to receive the award for her husband posthumously.
The tribute came as a long round of applause, when another Mumbai hero Additional Commissioner Ashok Kamte's wife Vineeta Kamte received the award.
Smita Salaskar, wife of Mumbai Police Inspector Vijay Salaskar, who also laid down his life on the line of duty, received the honour from the president.
For Tukaram Gopal Ombale, who showed exemplary courage while fighting the terrorists, his wife Tarabai Ombale received the prestigious award.

Ashok Chakra awarded to Mumbai hero's
What a shame?The real heroes who actually fought and died (Late Gajendra Singh, Major Sandeep etc) are not mentioned here and who dies accidently are getting all the fame. This is worse act than what terrorists did.
it is really unfortunate that you are calling their heroism just a accident and nobody is questioning or doubting Major Unnikrishnanan or his support staff for their bravery. But let me remind you that NSG stared their oprations only after 3 in the morning and Mumbai police was fighting with them with the terroists. And that is how These three expired. And one of major officers of Mumbai Policewas fighting with terroist in Taj for 6 hours and nobody is mentioning his name also. He is VISHWAS NANGREPATIL DCP ZONE 1 and govenment or media has totally neglected him. He fought with just a pistol and no lifejacket. but nobody is taking of him at all. it is sad and not justified. ans sir small request please do not rank the effort. Please appreciate the work.thanks

Dear Kavita karkare, I personally send you my salute. Hemant Karkare was a true policemen who protected the people of India from any type of terrorists. Everyone of us decent Hindu's are proud of the deeds of Hemant and his officers from the ANTI TERRORIST SQUAD.

May the noble souls of these great heroes forever remain at peace. The Govt. has much to answer for not providing proper equipment to these heroes.
Yes, we must salute our heros. At the cost of annoying many learned reader, I would like to raise my objection to the Ashoka Chakra awards given to 3 Mumbai police senior officials. They were brave officers, no doubts, they gave their lifes for country, no doubt. I salute them and their families for their supreme sacrifice. My reservation is that, Is this death any different from the other NGS/ police officer (junior ranked) died on 26th Nov.? Or is it any different from the sacrifice made by brave policeman fighting Nexals day in and out? Or any different from our armymen who are killed daily in J
When i saw Hemant Karkare's wife reciving the award and the President patting her, I cried once again like a babv-- last time I cried was at the TV coverage of Karakare's funersl. But this time I also cursed those politicians who have neglectd the country's security, out of inefficiency, and out of their greed for money.
Just by giving an award to ouor great heroes, is not enough especially in the case of Karkare - an officer with such a clean track record. A road should be named after him as a perpetual memory.
Lets be honest seeing hijras who assaulted innocent young women on camera and the nationalist government of the day showing no sense of remorse or intention to act these souls who made highest sacrifice must be feeling that was it worth it after all.This is going to have a demoralising effect on the honest law abiding citizens as well.Its time to introspect if these guys and their political accomplices must be given the control of the nation.The very same MRS KARKARE was hounded by the fake nationalist for having defended her husband in the MALEGAON probe by calling her a congress stooge.How insensitive can these educated indian MULLAHS get in trying to defend there ideological brethren.May god give these noble souls the srenght to overcome the crisis and bless there children.Only those who have given a part of them for the nation know the truth of nationalism and nationhood,not these oppurtunistic fanatics who provide moral and political support by getting at even Mrs karkare.
We have no words to express our emotions and solidarity with the families of our brave heroes. We only have prayers , prayers and prayers for all of them .Yes !! The only other emotion which many of us Indians now have developed is the internal resolve.
I send my personal salute to these hero's, who defended our lives by sacrificing theirs.May the God give courage and strength to their families.
