Kolkata, March 13 Investigations into the death of a Sankrail-based gynaecologist in 2004, suffered a setback when one of the accused reportedly committed suicide at his Nimtala residence late on Wednesday.

The body of Sadhu Khan (35), who was out on bail, was found hanging from his bedroom ceiling, police said.

In May 2004, Dr Sushil Pal, a gynaecologist attached to the Serampore Walsh Hospital, was found to have allegedly committed suicide. The investigations, however, later revealed that the doctor had been murdered and that Khan had allegedly thrown the victim's body into a canal in Howrah. Khan was arrested in June 2005. The death-by-drowning theory, which was initially put forward, did not help after Pal was found to be a good swimmer. There was also a deep injury on his head.

Before moving to the Serampore hospital, Pal had been working for nearly 15 years with a hospital in Jalpaiguri. One of the cases handled there by Pal was the examination of a rape victim, in relation to which he was to depose at a Siliguri court.
