Musharraf blames Pak Govt for tensions with India

Islamabad Former President Pervez Musharraf has blamed Pakistan's current administration for the tensions in ties with India in the wake of the Mumbai terror attacks, saying it should have made it clear how strong it is about fighting terrorism.

"Well, you know if you don't fight terror and make sure everybody knows how strong you feel about it, you may have problems with other countries like America. And yes - now the situation with India," the former military ruler said in an interview in London, where he is on a private visit.

Asked if the tension between India and Pakistan would not have occurred if the current Pakistani administration had made it clear how strong it is about fighting terrorism, Musharraf told interviewer Daphne Barak: "You said it."

He said the situation with India had become ‘very complicated’ because of the government's stance. "This is what terror is all about. By now - it has become a very complicated situation," he remarked.

Musharaf said the ‘kind of violence’ now witnessed in Pakistan had ‘never happened during my time’.

He said, "I made up my mind early on that I was going with America against terrorism. I have done anything in my power to block terrorists and fundamentalists.”

"There is only one way to deal with terrorists – to fight them," said Musharraf, who quit in August to avoid impeachment by the Pakistan People's Party-led government.

Musharraf said Pakistan is his home and he would not leave it even though he may face threats to his life there, the interview that appeared in ‘The News’, said.

"I would not leave Pakistan. It is my home. Am I safe there completely? Of course not. If there are risks but it is not new for me to live with risk. The army is protecting me. But of course - everything is possible," Musharraf said.

Pakistan is in a "very bad shape", he said. "I brought foreign investments. I built roads. Nobody invests there anymore."

When the interviewer pointed out that he was first Pakistani ruler who had not been executed, jailed or exiled, Musharraf said even the interviewer was getting emails ‘from people who would like to have me back’.

Musharraf said he did not miss the ‘good old days’ when he was in power. "I have found time to spend with my family and friends. But I do care about Pakistan. It is obvious that I keep watching what is going on," he said.

Musharraf said he intended to stay on in Pakistan and write another book and ‘go on the lecture circuits’.

Though Musharraf's son Bilal is in California, he said he wanted to stay on in Pakistan as he has a daughter who lives in Karachi. "She organises musical events. Pakistan is my country," he said, adding that he would continue to live in Rawalpindi till his house in Islamabad is completed.

Musharraf also said he had just finished reading his own autobiography ‘In the Line of Fire’ because he ‘needed to reflect’. Asked if he had started writing his next book, he said: "Not yet. The whole situation in Pakistan got me and others in a state of shock."

He said he was looking for the ‘right timing and right representative’ for going on the lecture circuits.

The interviewer told him she received emails from Pakistanis and also PPP leaders who are ‘missing’ Musharraf, he said, "Well, you are getting lots of feedback from the people of Pakistan. You just told me yourself even members of the PPP are very disappointed (from Zardari's conduct)."

Terrorists wanted war, that is why they attacked India. by Nautankee on 02 Dec 2008

Only the terrorists, fundamentalists and fanatics will be the winners if these two countries go to war. Terrorists wanted war, that is why they attacked India. Don't grant them this wish.

Musharaf and relations with India by rr on 02 Dec 2008

I dont think Musharraf has any right to say anything about relations with India. He was one of the fellows who did worst on that front and infamous 'kargil war' was his brainchild. His contribution to the spoiled relations with india has been very strong, immense and deep rooted. He never had good inner feeling for India. Whatever he did and said was as superficial and he is a man who cannot be trusted. Ask any Indian or and Army man about him. You will get the answer right away. He better shut up and carry on with his retired life like a good solider if nothing else.

What a shame and disgrace to every citizen of India that the elite NSG Force was transported into ordinary BEST buses, whereas our cricketers are transported into state of the art luxury buses, these Jawans lay down their lives to protect every Indian and these cricketers get paid even if they lose a match, we worship these cricketers and forget the martyrdom of these brave Jawans. The Jawans should be paid the salaries of the cricketers and the cricketers should be paid the salaries of the Jawans

You are jealous because of India's economic development. You are simply pawns and puppets in the hands of U.S.A and China. No self respect. You stink. Not able to govern a small pece of land with small population and you want more land in the form of Kashmir. You will die a dog's death. Pak will become extinct like Hiroshima.

Gujrat and Kashmiri conflicts--- by romesh.sharma on 02 Dec 2008

Hey Gujrat riots were absolutely reactionary from what was done to Hindu pilgrims. Moreover during these riots many Hindus were also killed That was not calculated/planned action but a frenzy when people lose their sense and compasion.About Kashmiris being killed is again to be blamed the attacks from accross the border and ofcourse misguiding, provocations and intrigues from the otherside.Apart from this fact once again you have to be sincere and acknowledge the facts that Hindu Kashimiris are the biggest losers, sufferers, displaced and butchered. The day Muslims start realizing the pangs of others half of antipathy is certainly over.See the things from both sides.

Gujarat riots by js on 03 Dec 2008

To begin with, let me say I am not a paki but very much Indian. But Mr. Romesh Sharma, you dont have the facts right. Gujarat riots were certainly not reactionary. Rioters from VHP/Bajrang Dal had voters list ready, using which they were systematically targetting Muslims. Muslims who ran to police found that the police forces either remained inactive or even sent these Muslims back into the hands of Hindu rioters. Romeshji, I condemn what is happening in Kashmir. I condemn strongly the muslim extremism and terrorism. But just because you are a Hindu do not fool yourself that all Hindus are pure, non-violent etc. First of all, even if Hindu pilgrims were killed, Modi as CM should have taken strong measures to prevent further riots against Muslims. On the other hand, even some upright officers like Mr. Sreekumar have said that Modi gave orders to police force not to act. If you still have doubts, you can also see the BBC reports and other independent reports. Morever even a movie like Parzania has been made by a Gujarati Hindu Mr. Dholakia. See that movie.Because of riots like Gujarat in 2002 and Sikh riots in 1984, I do not believe any more that Hinduism is a religion of peace. It is also becoming a religion of violence and counter-violence like Islam. In fact if you see LTTE which introduced the concept of suicide bombing in the world, most of the LTTE people are Hindus, not Muslim extremists. By the way, I am born of Hindu mother and Christian father and a proud Indian, but we should be objective about facts and not hesitate to acknowledge the mistakes of our civilization.

JS by Malathi on 05 Dec 2008

I hate LTTE but still they are not fighting with the whole world. You are saying false statments on Gujarat is worng. It was started with the train buring by Muslim extremists. Christian like you need an oppurtunity to point fingers toward Hindu. Though your mother is a Hindu do you goto Mandir ? workship Hindu religion at home. ?
