"The vote should not be kept back," leading Islamic seminary Darul Uloom Deoband said in a fatwa in response to a question whether Muslims should vote in the elections.
"One should vote for the party and the leader that is better and works in favour of Muslims and the country," the fatwa said, adding, "India is a democratic and secular country. Hence it is out of place to look at its politics in Islamic perspective and test the parties and political leaders on Islamic principles."
Deoband seminary's Darul Ifta, which issues fatwa or religious decrees on different issues, declined to favour any particular party or candidate and left it to the people to decide whom to vote.
"The status of vote is as testimony and witness; so it is the responsibility of every Muslim to utilise it as much as possible correctly," the fatwa said.
Echoing similar views, Jamiat Ulema-e Hind spokesman Maulana Abdul Hameed Nomani said "Everyone, who has a voting right, must come out to vote."
"The voters should keep in mind about their and nation's welfare while casting their valuable votes," Ilyasi said.
Maulana Umer Ahmed Ilyasi, Secretary General of All India Organisation of Imams of Mosques, said: "Voting is a fundamental right. It must be exercised by every Muslims."
"It is their responsibility. If someone is not voting then he or she is doing wrong," he said.

These eddicts issuing Maulanas in one or the other way favour a party.Maulana Madni as we know well is MP R.S.due to congress.He is the man who speaks on party lines and never heard speaking on muslim problems.With my limited knowledge of Islam, I can say such fatwas arenot within the framework of islamic law.

i like how smart ,sensible and reasonable some of the supposedly fundamentalist some of the Indian Muslim organizations are going by their public pronouncements. hopefully Indian Muslims will listen and follow the advise.

i am proud of this statement given by the muslim cleric. it is high time muslims behaved with maturity and gave other political parties a chance to serve them other then the congress party which has come into power with the help of muslim votes. we are a democratic party and should not judge a political party by religion.
It is a right perspective though i think there are Muslims in the urban areas who are illeterate and ignorant about the importance of voting on the basis of stance of politicians.

Shun your negative thinking get into the stream of progress, show your belongingness, your love to the country you are born and living in. Voting is every citizens fundamental right, milliions of tax payers money is spent to complete this process. This is not done to make stupid comments but to exercise your right. The incidence which you have mentioned are a black spot in the modren history of India but we cannot forget our fundamental duty to the nation.

Excellent, we live in this country and we should honestly follow its democratic fabric without any religious belief, I personally believe if all indians feel that they are first indian and do not allow communal elements to play any dirty game, then only we could make our country stronger and united.

Then why shy from issuing a fatwa against terrorism? Why shy from issuing fatwa declaring Hindus as your brother and India as a secular country? Double talk.
Seema, You should develop the habit of reading the online news and the news papers every day. The Fatwa against terrorism has been issued several times again and again, the actions has been delplored by all the Muslims, there is no double talk here, we are all Indians and the terror is striking Indians not just Muslims, Hindus, Christians, and Sikhs or so many other communities we have in our country.
A commendable and progressive step. If taken seriously, this ill go a long way in improving the functioning of democracy in India and the improvement in accountability of government.
