Toronto, February 8: "My husband is not a monster as being portrayed around the world," says the 28-year-old wife of Dr Amit Kumar who has been arrested in Nepal for allegedly running an illegal kidney transplant racket in India.

Poonam Kumar, who along with her two young sons lives in a spacious home in Brampton, said that she has not spoken to her husband since the scandal broke two weeks ago and that she has not been informed about his arrest.

"My husband is innocent," she said in her first media comments on the issue. "You tell me what human would want to do these things to anyone. My husband didn't do anything wrong."

Clad in a 'salwar-kameez', a depressed-looking Poonam, who was speaking in both Hindi and Punjabi, said "my life is finished."

"I have great respect for media but it has pre-judged the issue," she said, adding that she has not left her Brampton home for seven days and is running out of groceries.

The boys have not gone to school since last week as she attempted to shield them from the world media knocking on her door. "I don't know what my options are. I don't know where I'm going to go," Poonam said.

She said her husband was not ‘the monster he's been portrayed as around the world, but a doctor who just wants to help people in need’.

"Everyone is calling him the 'kingpin' and such things, but he didn't do anything wrong," said Poonam, adding the first time she heard anything about his alleged involvement in kidney transplants was from watching news.

Simpathy for you and children and take care of your self and children. There may not be much you can do to help him. The law will take its own course.

How does she explain living a luxurious life in Canada by Raj on 09 Feb 2008

How does she explain living a luxurious life in Canada, whereas her husband is a doctor in India? I have only heard the reverse happen so far i.e. doctors in Canada/US having luxury in India due to the converted money value.

Poonam its time to pay back the lucre you enjoyed by prasoon on 09 Feb 2008

I have sympathy for Poonam who along with kidney scam. She had also been victim of Amit Kumar's lie. This is time when every one who has enjoyed lucre is paying back. That is why it is said that earn little but earn with dignity to keep your head high. The black money earned by many has made life of honest people miserable in India because they are ready to pay higher price for a commodity which a honest person fails to pay from his hard earned income.

Dr.Horror by L.Mukundan on 09 Feb 2008

Wifely sentiments aside, who does she think she is fooling? Probably only herself. As per her own line, she too should not "pre-judge the issue andf say he is not guilty till he is shown to be innocent.

Trying to protect an animal by Y Singh on 09 Feb 2008

Dr Kidney's wife by Neil Razdan on 09 Feb 2008

Oh Yes! He is a monster alright! A kidney munching moster! Your life in luxury is from that kidney money your monster husband got from the kidneys of poor Indians.

Mrs. Kidney's claim! by nosacore on 09 Feb 2008

INNOCENT! My Ass!

Dr's deeds are good and bad by Prathap Chithapuram on 09 Feb 2008

I agree to some extent as what Ms. Lakshmi says in her message but she seems to forget that an individual body has been violated without their consent in most cases (allegedly). I would like her to give her kidneys under those conditions and then let me see if she praises the Doctor for the all the good deeds he has done by putting her kidney into a person who kidney has failed. First of all let me say that I don't believe anything about this case. Secondly, I don't believe all these alleged operations happened without the knowledge of the local police and politicians. Doctor is just a scapegoat who is going to take all of the blame. If the events mentioned are true then the Doctor in question is a player and not the only one that should be put in jail

Kidney kinngpin by xxx yyy on 09 Feb 2008

All of Amit's family members, friends, and co-workers those who are involved in this worst business will be behind bar throughout life and Amit should be hanged immediately after proper justice

My husband not a 'monster': Dr Kidney's wife by kalki on 09 Feb 2008

Who are you kidding lady.?If he was innocent why did he go hiding and then why did try bribing the Nepali police to let him go.Common, would you feel the same if you or your kids were victims of his horrendous acts.Simmer down and let the law prevail

Dr. Kidney's Wife by Jerseygal on 09 Feb 2008

After reading your comments, I believe you are sympathizing with the wrong people as you are unaware of all the facts the story has to offer. There was an extensive show on CNN which brought to limelight the selling of Kidneys to the Western world from the poverty-striken people in liue petty cash owed to them. This business became dirty and an investigation began. A wife doesn't know what the husband does?? what a family??

monster dr. by arun on 09 Feb 2008

her husband not a monster but killer of thousands and should be punished in public

Dr>amit and the Kidney Racket by Varinder Sarin on 09 Feb 2008

Assuming Dr.Amit is innoce but let the nation know why and how he managed to get 5 passports and what was the necessity. From where he made billions, what business he was doing if not selling Kidneys.if he is really innocent then let him spill the benas about his partners and patrons.
