“The problem is that the field is so small. While twenty business families monopolise the economic scene, twenty political families monopolise the political space in Pakistan.
As yet, there is no time for common people like her to play a role in politics and until that happens, I am content being a writer “, she said.
Asked whether in a society like that of Pakistan her actions would have a greater impact as a politician than as a writer, Fatima, who is in Jaipur to attend a literary conference, said as a writer she had greater freedom to speak out her mind and that she was read by a large number of people in Pakistan.
“As a politician your hands are tied. Many a time, you have to conform to certain social dictates you don’t believe in. As a writer, however, I write anything,” said Fatima, who is a noted columnist for ‘the News’.
“Though I write in English, I also publish my columns in Jung which is the largest circulated Urdu daily in Pakistan. My statements, therefore, have a reach as large as any politician”, she added.
