New Delhi, January 21 In a keenly contested battle, which saw action, emotions, and soaring tempers, Osian New Delhi Heroes beat Indian Nationals FC 1-0 to win the SAIL-ONGC DSA Senior Division Football championship, thanks to a late goal, scored by Gyan Mayon in the 83rd minute, here at Ambedkar Stadium today.

New Delhi Heroes were without four of their main players—Bhuvan Joshi, Krispin Chetri, Prashant Jaggi (all serving out card suspensions) and Moni Tombi, who was injured.

With the match looking to be headed towards extra-time, New Delhi Heroes woke up to the fact. A volley from the left flank by Amitya Ganguly found Mayon just outside the penalty box and the forward wasted no time to find the mark and seal victory for his team. Though Indian Nationals dominated the match, their strikers failed to capitalise on the chances created by their mid fielders. In the opening minute, striker Iffyani Nkenchor shot off the target.

On the counterattack, New Delhi Heroes managed to create two opportunities, but striker Baba Tunde failed to get the ball pass Nationals’ custodian Rajat Guha on both the occasions.

Minutes later Indian National mid fielder Rishi Kapoor got into act. New Delhi Heroes custodian Rashid Mehdi punched a free kick by mid-fielder in the 24th minute over the bar. With the first half going goalless, ND Heroes coach Chima Okorie replaced Ganguly with Malswama in the half time.

As compared to the first half the second half was dull as there were hardly any moves made and it seemed that the match would be decided only through tiebreaker as the players were tired and were hardly running. Seeing his players getting tired Indian National’s coach Surender replaced striker Iffyani Nkencher with Peter Osuagwu in the 82nd minute and that turned out to be a nightmare for them.

“Our four players were out so the young player got a chance to showcase their skills in this crucial match. This title win has showed that our team has good talent,” Mayon said after the match. With this victory, New Delhi Heroes got richer by Rs.1 lakh.
