“As the Prime Minister has recently said, if the farmers have suffered for so many years it is only because of the wrong policies of the NDA government supported by the TDP,” she said addressing a public meeting in this town in East Godavari District of Andhra Pradesh.
Describing the Union Budget’s loan waiver for farmers as a historic step, she said the decision would benefit crores of farmers in the country.
Dismissing criticism of the UPA government by the TDP, she said opposition parties did not do anything for farmers when they were in power.
“The TDP and BJP, which claim to care for farmers, have never thought of helping them by waiving their loans,” the Congress president said.
“What they are saying is sheer hypocrasy”, Gandhi said.
She was addressing the meeting after inaugurating a lift irrigation project that aims at providing water to about two lakh acres.

The Indian farmers plight has not developed just now. In fact this has been going on for the past several years. It had got aggravated during NDA,s six years rule. To save the farmers from debt harassment, Rs 6000 crore loan waiver scheme now been announed by the ruling government should be consideed a boon.
Giving handouts in the form of loan waiver to poor farmers is not a sound agricultural policy. Madam, you and your ministers have played these cheap tricks just to stay in power a little longer and win elections in 2009. Sound economic policies for agriculture need modernization of agricultural technology, education, mobilization of agricutural inputs, rural banks and credit cooperatives, the development of rural markets and agricutural prices. Don't try to hoodwink the Indian people by your cheap tricks. How much money have you contributed from your pocket towards these laudable handouts?
