NDMC property tax collection to go online

New Delhi, January 10 After initiating a trial programme in July last year, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) is all set to launch its online property tax collection system from April 1 this year.

Similar to the online system launched by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) in April 2007, property owners can now pay their tax online using their credit card without having to wait in long queues at the NDMC office. The information on ownership of properties that remain buried under piles of files and papers will also be available online.

“We had launched the system only for the department last year and have made transactions worth Rs 100 crore already. These transactions have been uploaded by the department after the property owner paid the tax at the counter,” Director (Tax) Anurag Goel said.

“We have a long process of filing property tax after tax payers file their dues at the counter which is just the first step. Though our system is quite efficient, there is scope for error once in a while. But the system has worked this year and now it is the turn of the tax payers to avail the benefit of convenience,” Goel said.

Each property tax payer will have an individual account and will have access to all details related to payment of tax for the property. While the civic body is yet to implement the Unit Area Method (UAM) of calculating tax as followed by MCD, officials said the system is an added advantage.

“Unlike the MCD, where people have to assess, calculate tax and then file it, we have to do it ourselves which leads to a lot of paper work. This system will help reduce the work load,” Goel said.

Details of all properties in the NDMC area such as owners, taxable value, property details and any pending issues will also be available online. The civic body, which is considered to be the richest municipal body in Asia, has about 13,000 properties under the tax net and has an approximate target of Rs 150 crore this year.
