New Delhi, March 1: Questioning the BJP for its opposition to the nuclear deal, former US diplomat Strobe Talbott has said that the Vajpayee-led government was ready to settle for much less than what has been offered by the Bush administration, remarks dubbed as ignorant by the BJP.

"The Clinton administration negotiated with the BJP-led government on the nuclear issue and that knowing what the goals of my Indian interlocutors at work at that time and seeing how those goals compare with the current Indian government has gotten out of President Bush by way of the civil nuclear deal, I can't understand how is that the BJP could oppose the deal as it obviously does," he told Walk the Talk programme on NDTV.

"I think half of what the Clinton administration has been prepared to offer the BJP-led government that we were dealing with, the deal that President Bush was willing to make with Manmohan Singh and company, the Indian side then would have gone for it," said Talbott, known in India for the two-year marathon talks with the then External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh.

The famed 14 rounds of talks, that took place in seven countries spanning four continents, were instrumental in putting back on rails the Indo-US ties strained due to India's series of nuclear tests in May 1998.

BJP hit back at Talbott saying that the NDA government had not held any discussions with him on the nuclear issue.

"I am surprised by his statement because during the last two years of NDA government, he was no more the US Deputy Secretary of State. We had no discussions on the lines of the current nuclear deal and the 123 Agreement," senior BJP leader and former External Affairs Minister Yashwant Sinha said.

Sinha said the NDA government ‘never pushed’ for anything related to the current Indo-US civil nuclear cooperation.

"Our deliberations with the US government only focused Next Steps of Strategic Partnership (NSSP)," Sinha said.

"Our position has always been that our relations with the US will always remain cordial even if the nuclear deal falls through," he said.

"In our time, as all the evidence will show, we were discussing peripheral issues like safety of nuclear plants etc. There was no draft of the kind like the 123 Agreement of the present government," the former minister said.

"We were not negotiating a deal of the kind which has been negotiated by the UPA government," Sinha said.

Christian Pranab Mukherjee says Hyde act not for India but Boucher says Hyde act is applicable by n.krishna on 05 Mar 2008

The christian Pranab Mukherjee lied to Parliament on Hyde act to push through the one sided Indo US nuclear agreement. USA wants to restrict Iran from nuke capability. Iran is a muslim nation and cannot be trusted. Europeans who have carried out the crusades and killed half a billion humans in the name of Christianity is justified in thinking that it is not safe for them to trust Iran. Muslms killed 75 million humans in the name of Islam feele that they are not safe if only christians and Hindus have the nuclear bombs. With oil money, and Pakis the muslim world created the Islamic bomb. Dubai was the nerve centre for this operation. Khan had the blessings of Mullas, Maktums of Dubai and even Saudi Arabia. I am of the view that Saudis have nuclear bombs in their underground army base that was supplied by Pakistan. A secret christian organisation Illuminati with its $60 Trillion slush fund is bringing a new world order of Bush. It bribes, fund assassinations all over the world and control politics of nations like India and the presence of Sonia is part of it. Christian US does not want Hindu India to have nuclear bombs and this nuke treaty will effectively do that job.

Brajesh Mishra could have discussed nuke deal on behalf of Sonia during NDA period3 by n.krishna on 05 Mar 2008

Brijesh Mishra himself was working for CIA and might have even discussed the nuke deal without the knowledge of Vajpayee. Vajpayee dropped the corrupt N.K.Singh, but refused to let go the traitor Brijesh Mishra in spite of warnings. The mischiefs of the Prime Minister’s Principal Secretary, Brajesh had become the PMO himself and was taking decisions which were not in the interests of the nation and the BJP.It was on Sonia's direction that her rival Maneka Gandhi was removed from the Atalji's cabinet. Mishra tried his best to see that Advani did not become the Dy, P.M. (Free Press Journal, July 7, 2002) The appointment of Chief Election Commissioner, T.V.S.Krishnamurthy, an anti-BJP and pro-Congressman who stretched the election dates to suit the Congress. The appointment of Chief Justice Anand as chairman of the NHRC. When the Indian Airlines plane was hijacked the Prime Minister Atalji was strongly refusing to concede the demands. Almost all opposition parties and most of the people were behind Vajpayeeji in this respect. N.K. Singh’s brother in law was on the plane and he and Brajesh Mishra forced PM to concede the demands of the muslim terrorist

Brajesh Mishra could have discussed nuke deal on behalf of Sonia during NDA period2 by n.krishna on 05 Mar 2008

Sonia first declared her birth date as 1944 and birth place as Luciana. This was confirmed by the Italian embassy which submitted her birth certificate to our Home ministry in 1983. Sonia’s name was Antonia Maino as per this certificate. This true birth certificate was submitted by the Italian embassy to the Indian Home Ministry when Antonia Maino applied for Indian citizenship. When Rajiv married Antonia Maino newspapers had written that both of them were of the same age. It also confirms that Sonia’s birth year was 1944. Antonia Maino’s father, who was a mason and a fascist, Signor Stefano Maino, was a prisoner-of-war in Russia from 1942 till Italy surrendered to the Allies in 1945. It is obvious that Maino cannot be the father of Antonia Maino. So the date of birth and place of birth of Antonia Maino alias Sonia had changed to December 9, 1946, and her place of birth became Orbassano. Brajesh was working for Sonia instead of investigating her. . Brijesh is holding a secret official position in the present UPA government that entitles him to a diplomatic passport. Brajesh refused to authorize from February to May 2004 the arrest of the CIA spy in RAW, .Rabinder Singh

Brajesh Mishra could have discussed nuke deal on behalf of Sonia during NDA period by n.krishna on 05 Mar 2008

Brajesh Mishra was a Sonia man put in charge of PMO for the sick and steroid dependent Vajpayee. Brijesh Mishra has strong connections with Sonia Gandhi's Italian family through his daughter Jyotsna. Jyotsna is married to an Italian and lives in Italy. On 21-9-2001 Rahul Gandhi and his live in girl friend Juanita alias Veronique, the daughter of a Columbian drug peddler, was arrested in Logan airport in Boston, USA by FBI. Rahul was having an Italian passport and was carrying illegally $200,000. Rahul called his mother Sonia Gandhi in India. In turn Sonia called Brijesh Mishra, Brijesh Mishra intervened on behalf of PM Vajpayee with the US Administration for the release Rahul from FBI custody. Rahul Gandhi was released only when the Indian Ambassador intervened and gave assurances to the State Department that Rahul Gandhi will be produced for any future enquiry by FBI. Not only that as a patriot, it was the duty of Brijesh Mishra to find out the reasons for the arrest and inform our CBI to take necessary further steps. The incident clearly shows that Brajesh Mishra was a traitor and also has deep connections with US

Cong (I) or Cong incompetent by N Guru on 03 Mar 2008

If true, it is sad that every political party is trying impede the country's progress because of their petty politics. The nuclear deal was for the country rather for a party. Besides having a spineless congress government trying to run the country in cohorts with a chineese backed party who keeps trying to put a spanner in the country's progess as well as an opposition who is worried that the governing party will get all the accolades for deal of this magnitude. But given the Congress parties record, it is, was (perhaps excepting the Indira Gandhi period) and will always be a spinless party bent on dividing the country into castes and religionto rule. The BJP on the contrary can be expected to try to treat Indians as Indians.

Scary but true.... by withheld on 03 Mar 2008

The country whose progress the nuclear deal with the US in its current form ensures is that of the US, not that of India.

Its a massive political failure of Congress under spell of an Italian waitress by Pragya Ghosh on 03 Mar 2008

Even if Talbott is true (there is no reason to believe him over Jaswant Sinha, but lets assume for a second)- it shows Congress has made a big political mess out of this. WHEN MAIN OPPOSITION PARTY WAS IN FAVOR OF SUCh A DEAL, SONIA AND MMSINGH SHOULD HAVE ENGAGED ADVANI, BJP FROM THE VERY BEGINNING. Indian Foreign, Defense, scientific policy was always bipartisan in Nature. Its primary responsibility of Sonia who wants to break this tradition, and spineless MMS who is not in control just oblidged.

N-deal with USA by Varinder Sarin on 02 Mar 2008

BJP was ready to sign N-Deal for much less as per Mr. Talbott. Then why the deal was not signed when both parties were ready. Why Talbott does not explain the reason. As far the failure of UPA to ink the deal despite PM, Sonia and even President of India is in favour of signing the deal, the reason is obvious not to lose power due to threat of CPM on whose crutches UPA is walking. Cling to power at any cost is the mamtra of our PM and Sonia Gandhi and so far they are very successful in this game.

Congress is dithering for Muslim Votebank- CPIM's threat has limited impact on Congress by Tatha Mukherjee on 03 Mar 2008

Sir, the bigger reason why Congress is dithering on this deal is Muslim Votebank. CONGRESS KNOWS CPIM HAS LIMITED POWER IN WB AND KERALA. IN ANY CASE, CPIM WILL HAVE TO SUPPORT CONGRESS INSTEAD OF BJP- WHICH BOTH TERM AS HINDU "FACIST" PARTY!

Congress surrendered to USA and did not explode N-bomb during time of Rao- BJP did NOT surrender to USA's dictat by Tatha Mukhopadhyay on 02 Mar 2008

Why Congress surrendered to USA's dictat over n-explosion (as happened during time of PV Narshima Rao), NOT BJP?

Truth can be spoken only by white skinned westerners! by Tatha Mukhopadhyay on 02 Mar 2008

Only those who are opposed to BJP for their vested interest (conversion, Jehadi terrorism go unpunished etc) will believe a foreigner over a patriotic Indian like Jaswant Sinha.

Why none believes an Indian statement and take eveything an outsider say's for granted? by Sanat on 02 Mar 2008

RTI should give all information; all inter country discussions need to be recorded to be de-classified after 25 years or depending on relevancy even earlier. Global cooperation is essential and safety confidence building measures amongst nations is key thing for a peaceful world.

Avoiding controversaries, Indo-US nuclear deal need to be finalised at the earliest by P.P. TALWAR on 02 Mar 2008

It is typical of BJP to backout from its ealier statements, whenever BJP stalwarts thought that they were cornered. Going by the saying that 'there is no fire' without smoke, a senior US diplomat' Strobe Talbott would not make such wild and unconfirmed statement, jeopardising the Indo-US cordial relations and correct diplomacy, unless he was sure of what he is saying. It is evidently clear that the Indo-US nuclear deal now being pursued by the UPA government and vehemently opposed by the BJP was infact initiated by the BJP led NDA government during its six years rule. Not to make mockery of the issue, it would be proper if the BJP had cooperated with the UPA government in finalising the Indo-US nuclear deal in the larger interest of our country.

Nuclear deal by J.M.Manchanda on 02 Mar 2008

I feel the real issue is being skirted. One, whether the nuclear deal being offered to India is worth signing and if yes, whether BJP is willing to extend support to the government over it should such a contingency arise. It is by now crystal clear that both the BJP and the Left have been opposing the deal on suspect grounds. While BJP seems loathe to let UPA take credit for it,Talbott's assertion notwithstanding, claim the Left has to guard its turf based on an anti-imperial ideology. Neither of the two opponents seems to have decided the issue on merits. It may come as no surprise, especially in the light of the budget proposals, if the UPA goes ahead and signs the deal knwoing fully well that the Left would withdraw support and ruling party will have to face elections. There is no harm in pursuing this line since the deal has evoked favorable response across the board and opposition has been motivated. The decision on the deal should be based only on national rather than party' interest.

Used car salesman like speak by Mr Strobe Talboot. by Sir m00ng on 02 Mar 2008

Mr. Talboot who was only an under secretary of state during NDA regime type. He is employing similar deceit employed by used car salesmen in the US to push Indians to believe the dud car called 'Hyde Act' americans are trying to offload on India as a new merc! India never asked for Hyde Act. Any act passed by US congress without consultation with India, a free, independent and sovereign country like India is not bound to adhrere to. If american congressmen can vote against CTBT and kill it all by themselves, I dont see any reason for Hyde act to start commercial Nuclear activity with India. Seriously Bush should work on removing such thorns in a good agreement.

Narendra Modi's Visa Rejection will Neither be Forgotten nor Forgiven by Singha on 02 Mar 2008

US foolishly thought they had more in common with christianist dispensation ruling delhi now. Mahatma Modiji's visa rejection since he prevented christianist conversions, is a sin for which US needs to publically apologise before requesting BJP support.

N-Deal: ‘BJP was ready to settle for much less by Rajesh Kannan on 02 Mar 2008

YES, BJP was ready to settle with less. I guess there was no HYDE act when BJP negotiated for the deal. Americans are the only good people in the world. They never speak lies, we all know that truth from IRAQ war. They found Weapons of Mass Destructions in Iraq. They have captured N-Weapons in Iraq. Aren't They? Please ask Strobe Talbott.

Sitaram is 100% right.I hope thecorrupt UPA thugs paid in Swiss bankwill learn a lesson by being bombedby NATO/US.But then they could notcare less for India anyway. They areJayachands of modern India.

Talbot by Babuchandra on 02 Mar 2008

Talbot should not interefere in Indias internal discussions. By doing so, he is breaking the diplomatic rules. It shows that America has some hidden agenda to push through the nuclear deal. Why should he comment on internal politics between Congress and BJP?

Talbott misrepresents NDA-NDA was willing even for a lesser deal by Col.(ret) R. Aggarwala, Univ Faculty,USA(ret) on 02 Mar 2008

Mr Talbott's misrepresentation only shows that US always acts in self interest bipartisanly in matters critical to her supremacy. No wonder a democratic government official is trying his best, even at the cost of lying, to push the deal against India arrived at by a Conservative administration, using a nincumpoop PM in India under the heel of a foreign woman. He is trying to provide a cover to the PM by saying this big lie. It clearly shows how anxious US is for this deal. It is a safe bet that if NDA comes back to power, US after some initial noises like in 1998, will renegotiate the deal with NDA. That should be reason enough to throw out this corrupt and anti-national UPA government during the upcoming elections within 2008.

Talbott says BJP never got the deal that UPA got by Col(ret)R. aggarwala, Univ Faculty, USA(ret) on 02 Mar 2008

UPA and particularly Man Mohan singh has acted in an anti-national manner, by NOT getting BJP on board during the discussions for N-Deal and putting his signatures on provisions within the deal that was repeatedly denied by him in the parliament. He was anxious to get on a high horse personally with US to earn favors in his personal interest, and at the cost of national integrity. He deserves a punishment equivalent to impeachment if there was one.

The Nuclear Deal by G. Din on 02 Mar 2008

This "Tu-Tu-Mein-Mein" would not occur if there is a constitutional amendment which forces the government to get all its agreements with foreign countries ratified by parliament before they become effective. This is quite insane when a minority government which has no support for the agreement commits future governments to something that it alone seems to be in favour of.It is always amazing to read how BJP did this or that under totally different circumstances and background. If as the government says that Hyde bill does not affect India and if it turns out that it does, India should be completely within its rights to withdraw, but it would be foolish to deny yourself the considerable advantages this agreement will bring to India immediately. You don't expect commies to change their dogmatic views, but BJP should reconsider their opposition to the deal.

Deal Ratify by Rajeev on 02 Mar 2008

Its easy to say this.. But I dont agree that Parliament should ratify each and every deal. Whenever anyone forms a govt. , its because public has faith in it and we should honour that. The present govt has also presented the facts in parliament.

White Talbott, Sonia trying to deceive Indians by Sitaram on 01 Mar 2008

White Talbott, Sonia trying to deceive Indians. There is a bigger conspiracy going on by the foreign powers to contain India and Hindus. Hindus and patriots must awake and not fall into traps. N-deal is meant to de-nuclearise India and bring India under western knee. Its a deal between whites Sonia and white USA. Manmohan has no power to make a deal or do anything with Sonia permission.

Double stand by Sujith on 01 Mar 2008

The BJP is now opposing the deal hoping that they can topple the UPA government with the help of the commies, the shameless chinese servants.

Deal by Rajeev on 01 Mar 2008

I dont think Commies and BJP will ever work together. Anyway its only one year left for elections. So its a race for taking credit. I think once the IAEA tals are over..UPA will ditch commies and call elections. In the months towards elections, they will go ahead and complete the deal and take the full credit for it.

Credit by Sujith on 01 Mar 2008

Congress never opposed the deal when BJP was in power, for the sake of credit. BJP had lost their credibility due to their double stand.

Nuclear Deal by Rajeev on 01 Mar 2008

Only BJP or Congress can take India forward. Rest all parties are regional and they are more bothered about their regions than country as a whole. The left parties are directionless. So For this nuclear deal, BJP, congress hsould forget their enemities and have a fruitful discussion and decide accordingly.
