New Delhi, March 16: The crucial meeting of the UPA-Left committee on the Indo-US nuclear deal will be held in New Delhi on Monday where the Government is expected to hand over the Left leaders copies of the draft India-specific safeguards agreement it has reached with the IAEA.

Government is also likely to brief them on the over three-month long negotiations it held with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on the safeguards agreement.

The meeting comes in the backdrop of major Left parties asserting that they would withdraw support to the Congress-led government if it went ahead with the nuclear deal with the US.

However, the Left parties have been saying that they would not be responsible if the government falls.

External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee, who heads the committee, exuded confidence that the Government would be able to convince the Left parties.

"I am hopeful of sorting out the issue (with the Left)," Mukherjee had said.

CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury said that the Left parties were totally opposed to the deal as it was ‘anchored in the Hyde Act’ which had conditions that were against the interests of India.

"The Government will have to move forward only on the basis of the findings of this committee. If the committee says that the deal is wrong, then it should be dropped," he told PTI.

It is not the first time that Left parties are threatening to withdraw support to the UPA governmen by kumar on 16 Mar 2008

Karat, is not an elected representative of the people, he cannot debate the pros and cons of the nuclear deal in parliament. He uses old-fashioned rabble-rousing and ensures walkouts and such like because he is accountable to no one. It would have made more sense to have insisted on a proper debate in the Lok Sabha and the upper house, allowing for a necessary intellectual exercise. But then, that is asking for too much from our leaders. Their expertise and skill lie elsewhere. Will the parliament of India, some time in the near future, restore the dignity of the House? Will democracy be strengthened or will this present breed of politicians destroy the fundamental basis of our society and divide India? And, how long will India tolerate this kind of exploitation and brutalisation of its ethics and norms of its civilisation?

Act in haste, repent in leisure... by Confused on 16 Mar 2008

Blaming the commies is easy, but somethings about the deal do not add up. The IAEA agreement with India is said to be ‘India specific’ and recognising India's military program but the Telegraph dated 13 March 2008 reported an IAEA spokesperson as saying about the draft agreement with India: “It’s more comprehensive than the previous ones and could well become the blueprint for all such future agreements”. Is India being goaded into the NPT without much fanfair ? Otherwise how can the so called ‘India specific’ agreement be a blueprint for all such future agreements ? The US has been steadily refusing 'similar' agreements with anyone else. Something is cooking....

No confusion by Sujitth on 17 Mar 2008

Mr. Confused, don't get too much confused. IAEA agreement could become the blueprint for all such future agreements. But it is not limited only to agreements that involve America. Also, the IAEA agreement is about safeguards for civilian nuclear reactors. It is not applicable to India's nuclear weapons program.
