The SGPC took over the land located right in the heart of the sporting institute after Additional Civil Judge, Senior Division, Jatinder Kaur today issued orders. The religious body had won the case in the Punjab and Haryana High Court on February 29. However, there was no official confirmation from NIS on whether they would challenge the order in the Supreme Court, and no institute official was willing to speak on the issue. Sources said the orders could have been challenged by the institute, but the legal cell of the Sports Authority of India was able to procure a copy of the orders only on Monday and it allegedly failed to approach the Supreme Court.
On the land, which is situated along historic Gurdwara Moti Bagh Sahib, the SGPC erected barbed wires in the presence of officials from the court, Chief Architect of Punjab, officers of the Revenue Department and other administrative officials.
Former SGPC president Kirpal Singh Badunagar said the place was sacred as Guru Teg Bahadur Sahib had spent a few days here.
Notably, the royal family of Patiala had donated the land for a gurdwara, but NSNIS had taken over it in 1968. The SGPC had challenged it in the court and won the legal battle spanning over 40 years. The Punjab government had given this land to NSNIS on April 5, 1992, through a registered deed, which the SGPC had challenged, and got it abolished from the court. NIS executive director LS Ranawat was not available for comments.
