New York, September 6: Expressing "shock" over continuing violence against Christians in Orissa, the Federation of Indian Christian Organisations in North America (FOICONA) has demanded immediate inquiry and replacement of local police and paramilitary forces by army to stop "ethnic cleansing by Hindu fundamentalist outfits."

The federation, in a statement, demanded dismissal of the Orissa government which it said has failed to protect its own citizens.

It rejected the contention of the Orissa government that the situation is under control, saying six more churches had been burnt since that statement was made by the authorities.

Hundreds of Christian houses have been set afire, it alleged, adding more than 60,000 Christians are hiding in the forests without food and water and number of missing persons is rising.

"Hindu radicals are making plans to cleanse Orissa of its Christian population. The brutal mob goes on raping nuns and beating up priests. There have been more than 3,000 forcible re-conversions to Hinduism," it charged.

It also criticised Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil for not naming Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) as the "culprit" and not holding the state government responsible for its failure to control the violence.
