London, February 2: An NRI doctor who drugged and raped a prospective Indian bride and attempted to commit the same offence on another victim after luring them through a matrimonial website has been jailed for 11 years in the UK.

53-year-old Anil Tangotra gave false names on the marriage website and used witty chat-up lines and poetry to lure his victims, both in their early 30s, to come to his home in Ilford, Essex, where he spiked their food and drink before subjecting them to brutal attacks, the Daily Telegraph reported.

A jury at Snaresbrook Crown Court in East London convicted him of raping and attempting to rape the first victim in 2006. He was also held guilty of sexually assaulting and attempting to rape the second victim in 2007.

The father of two, who is going through a divorce, showed no reaction as Judge William Kennedy handed down the sentence, saying: "You were.a sexual predator determined to have sexual intercourse with young Indian women by whatever seduction, trickery or force became necessary."

The rape victim, an Indian student, told the Court that she was treated ‘like a call girl’ during a night of ‘pain and devastation’.

The other woman, a teacher, wept as she described waking from a drug-induced coma to find the married doctor trying to have sex with her. A sedative found in her bloodstream matched one found at Tangotra's home after his arrest.

Tangotra, who had a practice in Plaistow, east London, insisted that any sexual contact had been instigated by the women.

misconception------ by romesh.sharma on 03 Feb 2008

Hey Doc don't dispel misconceptions.I am proud Hindu and true Indian.Perhaps to someone Typical but sincere in thought and mind.Say what I feel correct and owe nobody to justify Rape or any crime which is for Law to care for. What made me to comment was a foolish idea of one who suggested that Dr.Tangotra should have converted to Islam.I don't think if rape is permitted in that religion either. The second reason was when someone wanted to justify Islamic theory of polygamy.Rape case/cases have nothing to do with religion or ethnic backgrounds of the person. They are criminals and must be punished as per the Laws of the Land.Hey,human mind is more capable of distinguishing right from wrong than of measuring merit and demerit. This act of crime is indivisualistic problem and only Law enforcement can deal with it.

Doctor with Manufacturing Defect by Shaji on 03 Feb 2008

Certainly Dr. Anil Tangotra is a habitual womenizer as prooved from his such acts and he should be castrated instead of putting him 10 years in jail. He is dangerous for the society. I also feel the 2 women who have no right to lodge complaint against him as they went to him to fulfill their desire.

Confused Debate on Rape by ashutosh mishra on 03 Feb 2008

Dekho bhai aur woh feminist behen jo likh rahin hain kafi gusse se, please do not spread confusion.Rape to me is intruding an individual's maximum privacy against her wish. This Tangotra or whoever he is, happens to be a physician. The trust of the patient(s) is involved. Whether consent or lack of it, he is criminal. There is no Hindu, Mussalman, Sikh, Jew etc involved. Yeh langot ka maamla hai. Undoubtedly Indian law requires revision based on experiences of the victims, while taking care of elimination of possibilities of its misuse, as we witness in dowry and SC/ST cases brought before courts. But, in a law abiding nation the law has been implemented in letter and spirit and the guy ought to be left to stew in his juice in prison for the loss of his self control and consequent perverse act. However, law could be made more stringent/deterrent by enhancing quantum of punishment etc.Other issues relating to Indian society needing reforms too need be addressed by an enlightened citizenry and civil society. However,if hypocrisy didn't prevail today, we would be seeing less of such events, not more. Let the Veerangana contributing to this debate pledge to set herself up as a beacon for the rest by practising no dowry,no ill treatment of her daughter-in-law,promote inter-caste and inter-communal marriage in her family and stop advertising about her beliefs from rooftop and attack social ills. India is looking forward to its next Raja (Or Rani) Ram Mohan Roy.Thanks.

Sharma, the typical Indian Male by Savithri Shankar on 03 Feb 2008

Romesh Shama is a typical Indian Man trying to justify rape by bringing other religions without answering how MEN MADE WOMEN as OBJECTS in India with the supposrt of IPC. Why does the religion come here? Typical Indian male behavior. And above all, he is telling this such a low crime and argues why so much fuss....Funny he won't be talking like this if it happens to his near and dear...No on ehas an answe for our SO CALLED CULTURE where women are traeted worse that s***.

NRI doctor in rape case in UK by MOHAN DADDIKAR on 03 Feb 2008

Dr.Anil Tangortra should shift his base to India and start raping women patients under sedation. The Indian judical system is so helpful to the criminals, that it is almost impossible to establish charge of raping against him in Indian law courts court and even if by by bad luck he is convicted after a decade of legal proceedings,he will be awarded a jail term hardly exceeding a few months.

Wake up Raja!!! by Savithri Shankar on 03 Feb 2008

Dea Mr. Raja, You seem to think that you are still a RAJA of those days!!! What do you mean that women should not go and meet men in our culture. That's the CULTURE you MEN has imposed on us and brainwahsed the whole time. Who are you, my dear MEN to define whom I should I see or NOT. Again, WOMEN are NOT OBJECTS (that was how you MEN defined us in the 19th century. Can yiu define our culture. I will define the culture for you: men can do whatever they want. Women are servants, objcets, dowry bringing persons, servant in the day, concubine at night, children bearing machine, if husband dies shoe should commit sathi. If husband dies she should be dicsarded in the soiciety, clean shaven..etc. THATS THE CULTURE YOU MEN DEFINED AND THRUST ON US WOMEN....Wake up my dear Raja, good olden days, Raja....

Women are equally culprits by Raja on 03 Feb 2008

Dear Ms.Savithri I appretiate what you are saying about the attrocities committed by men on women but if men are doing wrong it does not mean that women start doing wrong as well.If women can not meet the men they do not know then ofcourse men are not allowed to meet the women they do not know.No matter what century we are living in it does not mean that we leave our thousand of years old culture just in the name of freedom expression. What we can do is to keep the culture and give more rights to women and men at the same time. The way Hindustani women are trying to be western,it looks really funny and does not suit them at all.A women should not be treated as a maid but women should also learn not to lose their honour in stupid ways.At the end of the day those women made a crime by meeting somebody older in the age which clearly shows their intensions.

Rape victims are culprits by Raja on 03 Feb 2008

Why the hell did those women go to see someone they do not know.In our Asian culture it is illegal for women to meet unknown men.Now you name it extremism or fundamentalism but this culture does make sense.

Reply to Ms. Savithri by Dr. A. Kumar, England on 03 Feb 2008

Ms. Savithri : As for women in India being told that chastity is paramount and must be held at all cost. And this doesn't apply to men. To me, India is living in year 2008 but Indians are still living in 19th. century. Indians as a rule are hypocrite race. What they think is not what they say is not what they do. It is not only my experience and opinion, but of 12th century Moroccon traveller Ibn Batutta, 13th century traveller Al Beruni and 17th century Italian traveller Niccolo Manuci. I still maintain that brave are those victims of rape who come forward and knock the door of law courts. Remember, there are many more who keep quiet. In India, I maintain that female empowerment by education and making them financially independant is the only way to remove this and many other prejudices inflicted on females. I belive jewellery and clothes have very little part to play in provocation. I understand that there is not one but many factors that tempts a man to comit this crime. One must not blame the ladies.

Reply to Ms. Savithri Shankar by Dr. A. Kumar, England on 03 Feb 2008

Ms. Shankar : I am sorry if I have not been able to express myself on this burning topic. Rape is the most heinous of all human criminal act. Although living in England for last 38 years, I am fully aware of what punishment are meted out to culprits in India and as an Indian, I am ashamed of it and bow my head in shame. I worked as a Police Surgeon for 10 years and came across many victims during my tenure. I can say I have first hand knowledge of the mental and physical devastation inflicted on the victims. What they do in courts and Panchayat in India is simply barbaric, inhuman and insensitive; an insult to human dignity and total disregard of criminal justice system.Letting rape offender to go scot free when he offers to marry his victim is nothing sort of complicity of the Judges and Panchayat chief in the act of rape. In many parts of India, law doesn't exist, in other parts, it is interpreted wrongly or to suit vested interest. I have total contempt for all these people and of course those who are involved in female foetocide, ie parent and doctors.

BRAVE for what? by Savithri Shankar on 03 Feb 2008

Please permit me to disagree with Dr. Kumar...Why do we need bravery or be brave to book the rapsit. As said by Dr. Kumar, OUR main grouse is that WOMEN in India were told, sorry brain wahsed, that Women SHOULD HOLD their chastity that is not applicable to MEN. If you are raped, then the balme game is on WOMEN such as why did you dress like this like that. Why for that matter why not go and LOOT the shops that exhibits costly items such as jeweleyr, TVs, etc..Further, telling OPENLY that some one is raped is a CRIME as victim is taken to task for speaking about the CRIME... I still think rape is a crime, may not be Indian MEN, but it should be that way. More importantly, the IDIOTS in the name of local Panchayat leaders to elite judges ask the victim (one raped) to marry the convict (rapist)...Shame on you Indian Men...We don't have to be BRAVE for this. The judges need to be BRAVE in India to punish the rapist..

Make it rule and applicable to all by Javed Hasan on 03 Feb 2008

This rule should be apply to all kind of crimes and anywhere in the world. Criminal is Criminal either he is Hindu, Muslim, Sikh or Christian. I hope we should comment and condomned the crime and the person involved in it not his relgion he belongs to. I hope every one will follow this from here after and come up with some healthy discussion.

NRI doctor get 11 year jail for rape by Dr. A. Kumar on 02 Feb 2008

It is no point arguing what nationality the culprit is. this sort of thing is done by everyone around the globe. Date -rape is a common thing using spiked drink or drugs. What is of importance is that the ladies were brave to confront their misfortune, and knocked the door of police and judiciary, demanding justice and they got it. It is a lesson to others who may think of keeping quiet.Again, there is no point comparing judicial system of various countries. It again depends upon degree of maturity, supremacy of intellectual state, advanced state of civilization and the enlightment of society as a whole.
