Nawanshahr, APRIL 27 Complaints have started pouring in at NRI police stations opened recently, albeit against the diaspora, contrary to the aim of this facility.

In Nawanshahr district, a case of NRI’s second marriage came to light yesterday, when his first wife lodged a complaint at the NRI police station. Acting on the complaint, the police booked six persons, including the NRI groom, who is in New Zealand at present, and picked up four of his family members.

SHO Surinder Pal Singh said a girl of Kahlama village in Kapurthala district complained that she married NRI Ravinder Singh, who originally hails from Retenda village of Nawanshahr district, in December last, not knowing that he already had a wife in New Zealand.

She said, “Two weeks after the marriage, Ravinder returned to New Zealand and sent her marriage documents along with a copy of papers of divorce from the first wife. When my parents called up Ravinder and asked about his first wife, he assured them that divorce papers were just a formality to settle down in New Zealand. And we bought this statement.”

“However later, when I called up at his residence in New Zealand, a woman picked up the phone and said that she was Ravinder’s wife,” she alleged. After enquiries from NRI’s relative, her parents came to know that Ravinder had married in New Zealand and this was his second marriage in India, said police sources.

The SHO said a case under sections 420 and 494 of the IPC has been registered against six persons and the process to get the NRI groom declared a proclaimed offender (PO) was on.
