London An Indian-origin woman and her partner have been jailed for falsely claiming grants and income support from the Government and using the money to pay for their luxurious lifestyle.

Shashi Bacheta, 52, was sentenced to 21 months in prison by the Swansea Crown Court while her partner Jeffrey Cole was jailed for nine months.

The two sailed around the world in a private yacht while falsely claiming benefits that amounted to nearly 50,000 pounds.

Swansea-based Bacheta admitted to 16 charges relating to the benefit and Cole (58), admitted to four charges.

Investigations revealed that even though Bacheta claimed to be too ill to get out of the bed as a reason to claim benefits, she went scuba diving.

Between October 2002 and January 2008 Bacheta claimed housing benefit, council tax relief, income support and disability allowances.

She claimed to be unemployed and failed to declare that she was living with Cole at his home in Swansea or declare any of his assets, which included his yacht Kismet.

She was paid disability living allowance, council tax benefit and housing benefit while cruising around the Canary Islands.

TAX THIEFS by DA on 21 Mar 2009

One should admire the tax authorities in UK, USA and Germany to protect national wealth. Shamless Indian Tax Authorities and Government should take note. So many NRI having business in India round trip money to Tax Haven and bring it back under NRI tax free benefit offerred to genuine Indians working abroad. Most of them are businessmen from India - using 182 days and round triping Income on which they genuinely have to pay taxes. But when will our government wake up. Funds which have to be used for India's economic development are laundered and fuel tax havens' economies who in turn fund states suporting terrorist and terrorism. Awake India
