Savitaben Mitcha (49), an NRI from South Africa, had come to attend a family wedding and was on her way to Navsari in Gujarat along with two relatives-Amitbhai Mistry (42) and Manish Dasana (36)-when the driver of the dumper coming from the opposite direction lost control over the vehicle and rammed the Scorpio.
According to the Dindoshi police, Dasana, who was behind the wheel, is reported to be in a critical condition at Borivali's Bhagwati Hospital and has suffered facial injuries.
Dasana and Mistry, who was also admitted to Bhagwati Hospital and has suffered leg fractures, had gone to the international airport to receive Mitcha and were on their way back to Navsari, the police said.
According to the police, dumper driver Vijaykumar Yadav (35) was on his way towards the city when he lost control over the vehicle and rammed the Scorpio, which in turn crashed into an auto-rickshaw. The rickshaw driver, Vashist Varnaval (28), however, escaped with minor injuries. Mitcha also sustained injuries to her legs.
Uttam Khairmode, senior police inspector with the Dindoshi police station, said Yadav surrendered before to the police and was arrested on charges of rash and negligent driving.
“The occupants of the Scorpio get stuck inside and could not move at all as the vehicle was badly damaged. We had to cut through the steel to pull them out,” Khairmode added.
