Gurgaon, August 24 * Cops undecided on motive
* Father says son attacked by armed man three days ago
* Police took no action despite complaint

Coming home on leave for two days, a National Security Guard and his wife were found murdered in their village in Farukh Nagar, Gurgaon, on Sunday morning.

Police said the motive is yet to be established.

Manoj Kumar Singh (28), was on a special posting as a Constable in the Army Headquarters in Palam for the last two years.

His father Lal Kumar Singh said three days ago, a man wielding a knife had attacked his son. Although a complaint was lodged, the police had taken no action. “Had the police taken some action, my son and daughter-in-law would have been alive today,” he said.

According to the police, around 5 pm on Saturday, Manoj and his wife Rekha (24) had gone to their

fields to supervise some ongoing work. They were on a Bajaj Platina bike.

When they did not return in the evening, his father called up. “I called him on his cellphone at 8 pm. Manoj told me he would be back in five minutes. But when he did not return even after half an hour, I called him again,” said Singh.

This time, the phone was switched off. “I got really worried and informed the village sarpanch. We began a search at 9.30 pm, which went on throughout the night,” said Singh.

The bodies were finally found in the fields — three kilometres from the village — lying in a pool of blood. The spot was isolated, police said.

Singh said he went to the Farukh Nagar police station to lodge a complaint, but the policemen asked him to bring the identity proof of Manoj. “They filed an FIR only after nearly 300 people went to the police station,” said Vidyanand, former sarpanch of the village.

It appeared from primary investigation that the couple were caught after a chase by the assailants, who were also on bikes, said a senior police officer.

“Tyre tracks indicate that the couple were chased for at least half-a-kilometre. The assailants caught up with them after their bike skidded on a mud patch and they fell. Kumar was shot in the leg, Rekha in her head. The bodies bore stab injuries too,” the officer added.

Police suspect that personal enmity or property dispute could be the reason behind the murder.

Kumar had joined the Army 10 years ago and had been posted with the NSG at Manesar. He had married Rekha eight years ago and they are survived by their four-year-old son.

Gurgaon Police Commissioner Mohinder Lal said: “A case of murder has been registered. We are investigating the case from all angles, but a motive has not been established yet.”
