NSG says media got in the way, wants guidelines

New Delhi Concerned over the way many aspects of its operations got “jeopardized” due to live images being broadcast by TV during the 60-hour siege, the National Security Guard (NSG) is now pushing for restrictions on media coverage wherever its commandos are engaged in combat. Having already raised the issue during its recent meetings with Home Ministry officials, the NSG top brass is likely to move a written request in this connection, it is learnt.

Sources told The Indian Express that the force is particularly miffed with the way its operations at Nariman House were broadcast live. Questions are being raised over the way Havaldar Gajender Singh fell to a terrorist’s bullet at Nariman House. “TV broadcast our commandos landing from a helicopter on the roof over Nariman House. By the time our men landed and started taking positions, the terrorists were already waiting for them and opened fire,” an NSG official said.

In contrast, NSG officials said, operations at Oberoi “could be conducted more smoothly” since TV channels were kept beyond a one-kilometre radius. “This zone was put under virtual curfew with no access allowed to television crews,” said an NSG commando leading the Oberoi operations. “The operations there took the least time, just under 30 hours, as compared to the other two places,” he said.

NSG officials said that while terrorists holed up inside probably did not have access to live TV images on the second and third day of operations, they still phones and were probably getting “instructions” from people watching those live images on TV.

NSG demands restrictions on media by Aninda Sardar on 06 Dec 2008

Perhaps a better way of doing things, rather than a blanket restriction on live media, would be a request for a delayed broadcast. The media gets its viewers and the commandoes get their time. There could be a delay of anywhere between 1 and 6 hours. The delay period could be continupisly varied so that no one outside the two establishments have a clear idea of when the events being shown actually took place. Alternately we could always use a jumbled edit sequence where events can be interchanged so as to give an accurate idea of events without revealing their sequence.

Live Coverage by Shihab Mohammed on 06 Dec 2008

It was utter foolishness to let these paparazzis cover the area as if covering a cricket match. I wondered why the heck nobody cared about it and cordoned off the area completely. Where were these NSG top brass team? Were they simply enjoying the live telecast? Why did those police men ran away from the terror scene instead of facing them and finish them then and there? Why these elite brass ignored the security alerts of the intelligence agencies including the C.I.A. It is high time that somebody do something about all these URGENTLY.

It was also a lack of discretion for the DG of the NSG to have come personally before the media before the operation was complete revealing his presence there. He should have assigned a spoke man.Even otherwise senior officers of such organisationsshould keep a low profile for their own safety

Media coverage by prashant on 06 Dec 2008

I think it is high time to put some restriction on the media. The media today is not really interested in broadcasting true, fair and genuine news. They are more focussed on so called "breaking news" to raise their TRPs. And in attempt to score over rivals, they are even compromising with the security of the country. Media should realise that these channels are available throughout the world and any unwanted element can easily get information on loopholes of country's security through these channels, which are broadcast by the so called sting operations. Guidelines for the media by V K Das on 06 Dec 2008

There is an urgent need for the press and the TV to show maturity and a sense of responsibility.Commercial interest must not be placed above national interest. Besides, credibility must be ensured by not making off the cuff remarks and putting out baseless and utterly false reports. The editorial comments should be well researched and unbiased . Credibility of the media is essential to preserve our freedom and security.
