South Extension, the favourite shopping haunt for most die-hard Delhiites, may have fallen off the eating map of the city, but now Part 2 boasts of a swanky Mexican diner, Sancho’s. It is situated on the third floor, the lift opens into a waiting area decorated with hand-painted tribal masks and, of course, some sombreros. The seating area is set up on two floors with the upper level holding the bar and an intimate dining space with low seating and bay windows. “Delhi has room for an upscale, casual Mexican diner. Many Mexican eateries have shut shop in Delhi soon after opening,” says owner Roger Narula, whose other ventures include Aurus Restro Bar in Mumbai and The Noodle House in Dubai.
Must-try: Among the appetisers, go for the Honey Chipotle glazed chicken skewers (Rs 195). A chicken satay lookalike minus peanut sauce, four chicken sticks are served on a bed of shredded lettuce, topped with salsa and sprinkled with pineapple. The steaming chicken was juicy and tender. The Sancho’s Chicken Enchiladas (Rs 295) are filling. Blue Corn Mexican Bruschetta (Rs 175) was another interesting recipe. “It’s called bruschetta, so that guests get a feel of the flavour,” says the chef Jorge. Palmsize bits of tortilla made with blue corn come topped with the Mexican cactus plant. We also tried fried tacos (Rs 295), a popular snack in the US. For the main course we tried king prawns with cilantro, guacamole and shredded lettuce. The coconut flan (Rs 145) is a delicious pudding. The prices were surprisingly reasonable, with barely any items priced over Rs 300.
Give a miss: The soups were disappointing. We tried Chunky Black Bean Soup (Rs 95). The chicken tortilla soup (Rs 125), made with poached chicken and Monterey jack cheese was better. Warning: If you don’t care for spicy food, this isn’t the place for you.
