Benidrom Top-ranked Rafael Nadal beat Novak Djokovic 6-4 6-4 6-1 on Sunday to clinch defending champions Spain’s victory over Serbia in the first round of the Davis Cup World Group. Nadal’s win gave Spain an insurmountable lead and a place in the quarter-finals, before David Ferrer beat Viktor Troicki 6-0 6-3 in the meaningless final rubber to round off a 4-1 win. The third-ranked Djokovic struggled with his serve and unforced errors at the Terra Mitica amusement park as Spain clinched their 15th straight home tie.

In Porec, Croatia, the hosts clinched a 3-0 victory over Chile to advance to the quarter-finals after Mario Ancic and Marin Cilic beat Nicolas Massu and Paul Capdeville 6-3 6-3 3-6 6-4. Ancic and Cilic served 14 aces as Croatia reached their first quarter-final since 2006.
