Chandigarh, March 2 Most of the city’s busiest routes were choked as the nagar kirtan procession progressed on Sunday. Apart from hundreds of devotees, the procession included more than 750 vehicles, 32 horses and 11 camels.

The procession is likely to cause traffic chaos on Monday morning in southern parts of Chandigarh and Mohali. Chandigarh and Mohali Police have requested commuters to avoid certain routes.

Despite it being a Sunday, there were impossible traffic jams on the roads. The traffic police failed to introduce any diversions which aggravated the situation.

The procession started from the Sector-8 gurdwara on Sunday morning, around 8.30 am. It passed through Sector 7, 19, 20, 21, 22 and 23. From Sector 24, the procession headed for the Sector-15 gurdwara. It proceeded towards the Sector-38 gurdwara on Sunday evening and from there, towards the gurdwara in Sector 40. It then turned towards Sector 37 reaching Sector 34 around midnight.

There was utter chaos on the roads, particularly in Sector 36 and 37. And with the intersection between Sector 34-35 closed, the procession caused major traffic disruptions in this area.

On Monday, the nagar kirtan procession will start from the Sector-34 gurdwara around 8.30 am and proceed towards Mohali. It will pass through the Sector-33 market, the Sector 32-33 dividing road, from where it will head for the Sector-46 gurdwara. From there, the procession will proceed towards the Sector 45-46 dividing road and pass through Sector 46, Sector 45 to reach the Sector 44-45 dividing road. From here, it will head for the Yadavindra Public School roundabout. It will move towards the Phase-III-VII crossing and then towards Madanpura roundabout to Phase-I gurdwara.

It will then head for the Phase-VI gurdwara and then for the Truck Union roundabout towards road opposite Phase-I police station. From there, it will proceed towards the PTL roundabout and then cross the Phase-V lightpoint to reach Gurdwara Sacha Dhan in Phase-3-B-1. It will then move towards Chawla roundabout and cross Amb roundabout to reach Amb Sahib Gurdwara.

Mohali Police said the road from YPS roundabout to Amb Sahib Gurdwara will remain closed for general traffic from 10 am to 12.30 pm. “We have made special arrangements to minimise traffic chaos. We have also tied up with the organisers of the rally and instructed them not to disrupt traffic. We have asked them to let emergency vehicles and school buses overtake the procession,” said a senior police officer.
