Witnesses said the naked girls in Bihar state ploughed the fields and chanted ancient hymns after sunset to invoke the gods. They said elderly village women helped the girls drag the ploughs.
"They (villagers) believe their acts would get the weather gods badly embarrassed, who in turn would ensure bumper crops by sending rains," Upendra Kumar, a village council official, said from Bihar's remote Banke Bazaar town.
"This is the most trusted social custom in the area and the villagers have vowed to continue this practice until it rains very heavily."
India this year suffered its worst start to the vital monsoon rains in eight decades, causing drought in some states.

What is new here? We see it on pavements in Mumbai all the time, whether you like it or not.
Whatever had happen in Bihar for rain making its not new in this country, today it is in Bihar for the rain making purpose, yesterday it was in some other place for some other sake and tomorrow it will be some other part of country for like wise condition. One side this country leading the world in almost every aspect and on other hand we have exemplary incident to show our standard in world level. Who is responsible for this..? if we all are aware from this kind of menace deed, and we are still in silenced, I don't think other than us anybody letting it to happen within ourselves......
I wish the people in India get more education. Belief in God is important, but so is belief in science. I remember seeing a movie in which a minister argued if a dam is built and water is used to produce electricity, farmers will not get water as something is subtracted from water. If such is state of the eduction of minister what is state of education for common people. Why is there no "Operation pani", like we had operation flood to increase milk production. Why can't government and scientists bring about changes that sorrow of Bengal's water is used for bihar and development of these states?Where is Rahul Gandhi whom congress worhship as God? Why can't he use his charisma to bring about innovations. Why cant't Ambanis think of something to bring water to this are rather than fighting?I truly hope we come out of this embarassing situations and incidents and truly act like a civilised people. Is ther no NGO working for upliftment of girls and women in these ares?
Biharis need to suffer more to know more about the God I guess. Remember that the transport/ clothes God gave you is your body - and Atma is the one God wishes to see and is Godly. Next move! "to sacrifice virgin girls for rain". Great move to get more uncivilised and babaric.
I think people are going nuts in bihar and also people who write things like biharis need to suffer more...60 years since independence and we still fight for regionalism...shame on all such people who write such blogs on public sites
If they plough the fields naked or while having sex its great as long they feel happy and have faith it will rain. Let their belief's hold good as long as it doesnt hurt anyone. I wonder whether the women are enjoying it, isnt it fun to be legaly naked for some time.(ofcourse its a terrible state to feel the pressure of no food). I really hope it rains in Bihar, I am willing to go naked too( to embarrass female gods( actually there is myth in the west about doing a naked dance to bring rain)...superstition or science what does it matter. Science still cant predict monsoons! so lets hope the faith works.
It's easy to sit in comfort surroundings and analyse situations. It's a different story to be a part of one. Imagine, no rain for months, no food for tomorrow, no hope, and worst of all no work. What does one do in such a situation? I am sure the villagers must have their reasons for doing this. Nobody raises an eye when models do the same on ramps in five star hotels. Lets stop being judgemental and pray with them for rains. The poor villagers are doing to ensure a meal on our plates too.
"What is wrong with that?" Dude...I think u r out of ur mind....Do you have any scientific fact to prove that it rains when naked girls plough the field?.... "Was anybody forced to do something they didn't want to do? So why get upset?" ... How do u know that...Did u take part in that? India is indeed a free country, but u should know ... what is freedom of expression and what is superstition... What ever happened there in Bihar is clear case of superstition and an act of desperation...I feel very sad for the farmers and pray for them...But I cant agree with your thoughts/Comments...Grow up dude....
Ok ,it is alright. india is a free country. What is wrong is spread of superstitions like this by so called desperate people.Have you not heard of reports where desperate father looking for hidden treasure sacrifices his own child or some elses child at the advice of a thantrik? Such a thing can't be stopped if we say it is alright naked girls ploughing the field to bring in rain.Whether rains will come or not.what really happens is that the voyeauristic onlookers will be looking at the girls instead of looking at the sky to see cloud formation. Disgusting, is nt it?
All such acts are not superstitions. The strong will and unfailing faith of certain section of the communities insome grave concerns drive them to adopt the age-long practices and demonstrate them in actions. All cannot be dismissed as superstitions. We donot know the actual sourcesbehind such acts or we never tend to know the psychology ofthe people in such whimsical actions.Ploughing the fieldsby nacked unmarried girls to invoke the rain God is veryold custom which is still in vogue in certain parts of Indiaand nothing is surprising. There are so many reasons behind the answering of the Gods to the calls and prayers of therural folks. One is because of the staunch faith of the villagers in the answering Gods.secondly, rural people wereconsidered more innocent and benevolent. They had immaculatehearts and thoughts;they were simple and pious. These qualities certainly will invoke the authorities to answerthe prayers in favour.Villagers were not childish, but childlike.
that would be a sight to see!!!
What kind of Andha Shradha is this? This is just a superstition. But our farmers are really on the vageries of nature and they are so poor and frustrated lot that their reaction is not very surprizing.
Why label it superstition? The villagers believe that they are shaming the Gods into sending some rain their way. What is wrong with that? They can believe what they like. It is a free country after all! Was anybody hurt? Was anybody forced to do something they didn't want to do? So why get upset?I hope the Gods are shamed into sending some rain their way...
