Nandigram: Police admit to ‘unpleasant’ exchanges

Kolkata, May 15 The police have submitted a report on Thursday regarding the clash between CRPF jawans and a police party during the first phase of panchayat polls in Nandigram on May 11.

The report, submitted by IG Rakesh Gupta (Western Zone) to DGP A B Vora, mentioned that certain “unpleasant” exchanges had taken place between CRPF jawans and the policemen headed by Debasish Chakraborty, OC of Nandigram police station, had taken place on the day of the poll.

The CRPF unit had alleged that Nandigram police constables had assaulted two of its women constables.

The state police, on the other hand, registered a complaint and alleged that CRPF jawans had beaten up villagers in Adhikaripara. The Nandigram police officers had intervened and in the scuffle, Chakraborty had sustained injuries.

Home Secretary Ashok Mohan Chakraborti had ordered IG Rakesh Gupta to investigate the incident.

Following which, Gupta had visited the Nandigram police station on Tuesday. Gupta also spoke to the villagers in Adhikaripara during his inquiry.

OC under human rights scanner
Nandigram police station OC Debashis Chakraborty has come under the scanner of the West Bengal Human Rights Commission. Chairman Justice Shyamal Kumar Sen of the human right’s body has ordered a probe into the allegation that Chakraborty had assaulted Shefali Pal and Manasi Hazara, residents of Sonachura, on May 11. The report has to be submitted within three days.The Commission’s reaction came in the wake of a petition moved by the All India Legal Aid Forum on behalf of the victims. The victims had alleged that the Nandigram police had refused to register a complaint regarding the incident.
