The postponement comes after Trinamool had objected to the earlier schedule of presenting the budget on March 14, when the party will observe the black day in connection with the Nandigram police-firing incident.
Last Year, on the same day a police firing had killed 14 people in Nandigram who were opposing the government’s land acquisition for setting up a SEZ there.
“We are against the presentation of the budget on March 14 which we consider to be a black day for West Bengal. If the date of the budget is not changed to March 15, the Opposition councillors will skip the budget session,” said Atin Ghosh, chairman of the Municipal Accounts Committee and a Trinamool councillor.
Trinamool councillors led by Opposition leader Javed Ahmed Khan had submitted a letter last week demanding the change in the date. Councillors belonging to the BJP and the Congress also pitched in for the change in the schedule.
The change in the budget’s schedule was today announced by Municipal Chairman Nirmal Mukherjee. The budget will be followed by a two-discussion on it.
