Pune, March 21 Just like the rave party raid on Holi day last year, a large contingent of Pune rural police led by District Superintendent of Police Vishwas Nangare-Patil raided a high profile party at the Kapila Resorts in Wagholi early on Friday and detained about 150 persons, mostly Iranians, suspecting them of having consumed drugs. The detainees were, however, freed a few minutes later after the police confirmed that they had not consumed any drugs. The police then arrested five persons for organising the “noisy late night party without seeking police permission” and storing a huge quantity of liquor illegally at the spot.

The arrested included Manish Chandrakant Dhole Patil (38) of Koregaon Park, Mathew Alexander Karkeliya (30) of Konark Puram, Kondhwa, Ares Muttha Mona Hari (37) of Walkeshwar, Mumbai, Rahul Baburao Wanjari (28) of Kondhwa Khurd and Javed Ahmed Khan (24) of Lulla Nagar. Searches were on for nabbing one more person identified as Ramesh Balkrishna Dhole-Patil.

Manish and Ramesh are family members of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MLA Kamal Dhole Patil. They were handling the operations at Kapila Resorts and were the main party organisers, the police said.

Nangare-Patil had planned the action much in the same fashion as that of the rave party raid. As per his orders, police sub-inspector Vasant Babar and constable Suvarna Mandlik, dressed in party wears went to the resort as a couple for participating in the event. The police couple reported their observations to the seniors. At the same time, Paresh Thakur, a citizen, also called the rural police control room to complain about the noisy party.

Soon a team of 50 rural police comprising of Nangare-Patil, inspector Bhausaheb Andhalkar of Local Crime Branch and inspector Ravindra Rasal of Loni Kalbhor police station raided the party around 3 am.

The police held about 150 persons dancing under the influence of liquor on a lawn about 100 meters from the resort. They were released after a detail inquiry in the presence of social activists, Asim Sarode and Harish Deshpande. Musical instruments and illegal liquor stock worth Rs 2.47 lakh were seized.

The raid, however, put the role of the police under scanner as inspector Rasal, investigating officer in the case, did not appear in the court. Assistant inspector Madhukar Gite produced the arrested persons before the court and sought police custody. The defence counsel argued that Gite was not the investigating officer. Also, Gite was not able to give proper reasons for police custody. So the court released them on bail. Sources said the police were working under political pressure in the case.
