Colombo In a bid to increase investments into the IT sector, the Sri Lankan government has appointed the chief mentor of Infosys, Narayana Murthy, as the international adviser on information technology to President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

"Mr N R Narayana Murthy was appointed as the international adviser to the Sri Lankan President and he has accepted it", Sri Lankan Foreign Secretary Palitha Kohona said.

Rajapaksa made the appointment after inviting Narayana Murthy as the chief guest to the ceremonial launch of '2009-Year of English and Information Technology' at the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo on Friday.

Speaking at the event, Rajapaksa said the great success of India in the field of Information Technology in the recent years has highly inspired Sri Lanka.

"It is for this reason that we have turned to India in addition to other countries for technical support to strengthen our own endeavours. We are honoured by the presence today of Narayana Murthy, 'the father of IT in India' and the chairman and mentor of the world famous Infosys," President Rajapaksa said yesterday.

Padma Vibhushan awardee Murthy has stepped down as Infosys CEO but continues as its chief mentor and board chairman.

Speaking on the occasion, Rajapaksa said adequate knowledge of both English and IT is a compelling necessity to access the opportunities available in today's society.

The President thanked India for assisting in training of English teachers in the island nation.

"I take this opportunity to thank our neighbour, India for the ready assistance given to the training of English teachers...as well as looking to Sri Lanka for expansion of IT related services that have contributed much to India's economic expansion in recent years", he said.

Rajapaksa said the rapid development of technology and the advance of globalisation demand a competitive edge in the moves towards rapid economic progress.

"Our aim is to provide English as a life skill to our youth as well as those already in employment to increase employability and advance in their chosen fields of activity", Rajapaksa said.

The combination of English with IT will open new avenues of employment for individuals and entirely new spheres of employment generation in the country, thereby improving living standards of the people, he said.

"We have already taken an important step in this direction with the setting up of the Presidential Task Force on English and IT last year", he added.

Not a bright decision by MR. Murthy by VR on 15 Feb 2009

Sure this is going to bring Tamils in TN to agitate against Infosys. Infosys has a huge precence in TN and that will have have impact on INFY. As it is there is no love last between TN and Karnataka. In light of this it is a stupid move from NM to accept the offer.

I would like to see Mr. Narayana Murthy as India's next president.

Narayana Murthy appointed IT adviser to Lanka Prez by V.Muthuswami on 14 Feb 2009

Smart move. Looking positively our government should ensure that Murthy's presence and expertise are leveraged to bring about a sensible framework where the legitimate rights of its Tamil citizens are fully honoured. How much of a foresight our political and MEA wallahs have to use each and every opportunity to bring about a amicable settlement for ethic issues in Sri Lanka?

Should not accpet the offer. Atleast for NOW. by RajSri on 14 Feb 2009

Hope Mr.Murthy would consider the sentiments of Tamils before taking the offer. I am not saying as a supporter of LTTE or other militant group but as a supporter of innocent tamils who have been suppressed by the Sri Lankan govt. Worst case Murthy should wait for atleast few years to see how the Sri Lankan govt develops the tamil region in case they are able to wipe out LTTE and then provide any support.

Hurt badly by Jai on 14 Feb 2009

shame on Mr.Murthy to work with a genocide Srilankan government, Mr.Murthy has very badly hurt the sentiment of Tamils.

HURT by maran on 14 Feb 2009

We should be proud of Mr.Murthy. But, Honestly, he should not have accepted the offer, as innocent tamilians are being killed in the name of military action against LTTE by Srilankan Government. As indian tamilian i feel hurt. But, its upto Mr.Murthy . I hope justice will prevail, please people should not forget instances where tamilians were burried live by Srilankan army. Indians has the right to be against LTTE , but should see tamil civilans as brother hood.

This is a far-sighted move by the Sri Lankans. The question is - have our Indian politicians ever sought to tap Murthy's far-sighted expertise?
