Mumbai, February 13: Maharashtra has always put the country's interests first and abided by the ‘Rashtra dharma’ (national ethos), Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray said, in an apparent indication that he is not pleased with his nephew Raj Thackeray's campaign against north Indian migrants.

"Shivaji Maharaj took help of Pathans who belonged to other religion and other country in his fight against Mughal invaders," he said in an editorial published on Wednesday in Sena mouthpiece Saamana.

"We also want to carry out the same work. Those who will come with us are our friends, our brethren. We will not think about their caste, region and religion," the Sena chief said.

In a veiled attack on Raj, who left the Sena in 2005, he said, "when Shivaji Maharaj unfurled the saffron flag in Maharashtra, those who stabbed him in the back were his blood relations, his own Marathas."

"When we proclaim the legacy of Shivaji Maharaj, it is not only to announce caste inheritance," the 82-year-old Sena patriarch noted.

For the last 40 years, the Shiv Sena has imbibed Hindutva, he said, adding, "now, the Hindu religion is facing invasion after invasion. At this time, reply will have to be given to this Islamic aggression through Hindutva."

Raj launched his own outfit Maharashtra Navnirman Sena in 2006 following differences with his cousin Uddhav, the Sena executive president.

Nation comes first says Bal thackerey by Col(ret)R.Aggarwala,Univ Faculty USA(ret) on 14 Feb 2008

South Indians particularly the Madrasis were targeted by Bal Thackrey many decades ago, because these very Madrasis had started the worst form of regionalism against all Non-Tamils. They therefore did not evoke much sympathy. But North Indians do not indulge in any form of regionalism in their states, and the actions of Raj Thackerey are purely motivated by desire to wean away attention of Marathi speaking population away from Sena. Balaji now knows it very well that that the real enemies of the nation and Maharashtra are not residents of other states but communal and terrorist muslims, against whom all Hindus and nationalist muslims and christians have to fight togather. Hence his statements are timely. More concern need to be expressed against the UPA chief's attitude, who is deliberately allowing the Raj's followers large latitude in indulging in this violence to create deeper gulf between Raj Thackerey and his cousin. In other words, Congress president is again playing with national unity to further her selfish ends creating hatred between various communities. She needs to be fully exposed so that her nefarious designs do not damage Indian nationhood.

on Bala Saheb Article by Sanjeev Tiwary on 14 Feb 2008

I strongly agree with Bala saheb and it is the need of the hour that Hindu(even Muslims who are proud of their country) get united and fight against the Islamic terrorism and any other national disintegration activities. Just give a thought, how our national heroes have sacrificed their lives to keep this country united and make it strong. Creating any thing is very difficult but destructing is very easy. similarly uniting people is very difficult but making them fight is very easy, our politician should must keep this in mind. Coming back to Raj thakre episode, I agree that what violence has happened that can't be justified but what about these leaders like Lalu and Amar who's tottering mouth never shut up and always gives lectures to Raj. Lalu who himself is hiding and patronizing to the veteran criminal like SOHABUDDIN is blaming to Raj thakre as " RAJ ke Goondon", same is the condition with SP leaders also. They forget that they are more responsible rather than Raj for whatever is happening here in Maharastra. They have ruled their states for many years , had they done proper development of their own states, this situation would not have come. No one wants to be far away from their near and dear one so everyone would have preferred to stay in their own locality, but instead of developing their states these politician have looted their states, made it bankrupt and also divided the people on caste line and made the properties of billions of $$. Moreover public from UP and Bihar is equally responsible, most of these people in Mumbai and other place in Maharastra are the same who are the staunch supporter of these Lalu and SP, even though they know that these politician are making them fool but still just on the name of caste they keep supporting them.

Aint it grand!! by Last Werewolf on 14 Feb 2008

Thoughts of Rashtra Dharma has struck the Thackeray patriarch now when his own nephew is trying to hijack the manifesto on which his own party was holding dearly to.Aint it grand!! Even crocodiles would file a suit for contempt if we say that Bal Thackeray is shedding crocodile tears.

Hate by ram on 14 Feb 2008

What a Joke. This person started his politics by hatting south Indians. His follower starting with North Indians. Ultimately all Indians will again become slave to some other as that is our TRADITION

Sena Hatred by Alphonso D Souza on 14 Feb 2008

It is extremely pleasing to hear what Bal Thackeray has status that the Nation comes first. It is time that he puts his words into action, come out and assure the Indian Nation that we are ONE, we are not different Nations within a Nation.

Indian Dream by richard on 14 Feb 2008

In which part of this country we are recognised as Indians? Our regional leaders are busy taking India away from our future generation. Our parents are happy to help them to do so for the sake of their religion, language, region and jobs.

GOVT,MEDIA RESPONSIBLE MAHARASTHRA HAPPENING by GOURAV SALLY on 14 Feb 2008

WHAT HAVE DONE WRONG BY NORTH INDIAN THAT THEY ARE FACING SUCH KIND OF TREATMENT. I THINK CENTRAL GOVERNMENT IS FAILURE TO PREVENT THIS ROIT,IF INDIAN GVT AND MAHARASTHRA GOVERNMENT WANT TO PREVENT THIS SHAMEFUL ACTIVITIES, I THINK THIS IS POSSIBLE AND ANOTHER REASON WHICH HELP THE GOVT TO INCREASE THIS MATTER IS PREACHING BY MEDIA (ELECTRONIC) IN WRONGFUL MANNER. WHY THESE MEDIA ARE DOING SUCH FOOLISH ACTIVITS TO INCREASE THEIR TRP. I AM ANNOYED WITH SUCH CHANNELS WHO ASK QUESTIONS FROM THE WORKERS OF MNS THAT WHAT ARE THEY DOING IF THEIR LEADER WOULD BE ARRESTED AND BY ASKING QUESTION FROM NORTH INDIA ,WHAT ARE THEY FEELING .I THINK MEDIA STOPS IMMEDIATELY SUCH KIND OF FOOLISHNESS .MEDIA STOP TO ACCLAIM THEY ARE SERVING THE NATION ACCORDING TO MY VIEW, THEY ARE SERVING SENSATIONAL NEWS. HOW RAJ THAKERAY ARREST AND WHERE HE GOES, DOES NOT MATTER, THE MATTER IS TRUTH WHICH MEDIA HAVE TO SERVE,NOT BY YELLOW MEAN .INDIA IS ONE NATION AND ANYONE CAN GO ANYWHERE. IF WE ARE SHOWING PREJUDICIES VISUALS WHICH ARE DANGEROUS FOR THE COUNTRY AND SOCIETY, PLZX STOP IT TO AVOID SUCH INCIDENT

Thackeray's Politics by V K Das on 14 Feb 2008

This is sheer hypocrisy. He is the one who started it. Now that Raj is trying to take it away from him he has changed his stand.Who can trust these communal politicians. They are worse than traitors and can do anything for power and money.

Ethical Governance by SKannath on 14 Feb 2008

Does India really come first to congress and Shivsena and BJP? by dr.G.Srinivasan on 14 Feb 2008

I am at present in the process of looking into why this happened ?Could this have been avoided? My answer is this had to happen.Because the seeds of division was sown way back in 1956(?).The country got its independence in 1947 and a constitution was drafted and this was upheld by a few people in the parliament without going through the democratic process of referendums. There were not one single referendums in a country which claims to be the largest democracy in the world. The sine qua non for citizen involvement is not the election of a few people whom the parties have fielded without giving the citizens viable options. The second is nobody seemed to bother about citizens involvement in serious matters concerning the nation-- which will give them a sense of belonging.Whereas all the countries of the world have resorted to referendum as mode of expression of common man on important matters India and the politicians ignored this important aspect of democracy. Then in 1956 the country was divided into 14 states each speaking a different language. Was this necessary? This will definitely act against any sense of oneness/indianness. Later what did Nehru Do?He tried imposing hindi on Madras State against which there was a huge agitation lives were lost buses burnt public property vandalised. Then came the name change Tamilnadu . Still Indians never realised that the country should not have been divided. Then came Teleugu Desam -- symbolising the language. Again shiv sena as such is a product of Nehruvian politics of dividing and ruling .This is much worse than Panchsheel where we were betrayed by china. Then the socialism he introduced from England .Did it do any good to the country? It kept us away from development and caused untold misery to millions. Now that the government has given away the Socialism the country is seeing prosperity .This only shows that Nehru's policies which were vehemently supportd by congress chamchas were wrong .Are we the kind of people who can go back and honestly come out and acknowledge our mistake which have far reaching implications and try to remedy the situation? Do we have the moral courage and honesty to recognize the mistakes. So long as the Government of india (read Congress) puts the label of Tamilian /Madrasi on me because i was born in Tamilnadu and then recognize that I am an indian too but a second rate citizen a south indian only lastly will they ever accept that I am an indian ,what i consider myself in the revers order-I am an indian first south indian next and thirdly I am a tamilian ---becomes irrelevant .Will congress acknowledge Nehrus mistakes and come out before it is toolate?

We agree with Shiv Sena ! by Sharad C. Misra on 14 Feb 2008

We entirely agree. Raj would have earned accolades of the entire nation by hounding out the illegal Bangladeshis from Maharashtra. By his thoughtless action to get political mileage he has divided the Hindus as a community.

Raj Sena by K.Singh on 14 Feb 2008

If Indian states have to be sealed provincially then let them have a federal system instead of the present unitary system. Raj's actions are deplorable and are for cheap political gains and they don't make him or "Bharat Mahan".

Jai Maha Rashtra by Maharashtra Majha on 14 Feb 2008

well, I see a bit of hypocrisy in the statement from Bala Sahab. At this point can I question the support our president Pratibha Patil got from Shiv Sena? Well, she was supported by Shiv Sena because shes from Maharashtra!!

Right to livelihood by Dream Girl on 14 Feb 2008

The leaders of Bihar and UP must do enough to develop their respective states so that people do not migrate to other states. By what Mr. Raj Thackeray has done is not right. The State of Maharashtra does not belong to him and his goondas. Every Indian has the right to live wherever he chose to do.

Nation (India) Comes First by S.L. Bhatia on 13 Feb 2008

India's problem is not religion, region,or value system of its people. Our problem is poverty, lack of education, lack of infrastructure such as roads, water supply, housing, transportation, etc. Let state and central governments and even NRIs should build more schools, provide computer technology, build low-cost houses for the poor.India is a sleeping giant. Let's be creative, not destructive.  India has a common culture, common national identity, and shared common goals. bal thakrey -- modern shivaji by sekhar on 13 Feb 2008

bal thakery is modern shivaji ,he deserves accoladesand he thinks in the right manner but media always dubs him as anti- muslim .he is correct in saying that india is facing invasion against islamic aggression which needs to be counter checked.

Thakrey Ji, I am an Indian then a Hindu. Always supported your opposition to anti-Hindu policies. Though never supported your pro Hindu policies. But on this I am all on your side.

Please Hindus unite, not divide by Vikramaditya on 13 Feb 2008

Please Hindus unite, and not divide. This statement is just eye-opener: "when Shivaji Maharaj unfurled the saffron flag in Maharashtra, those who stabbed him in the back were his blood relations, his own Marathas." Anti-Hindu forces are conspiring to create divisions among hindus, and hindus are fighting fellow hindus. This is sad. For the sake of our dharma and Bharat mata, please work to unite all Hindus and create a strong Hindu Rastra.

I don't know when did he learn such great thing? May be after Amitabh gave him money and Amar Singh offered him some poll alliance in UP.

i think what is happening in mahararashtra is right.atleast political leaders from north india will introspect themselves.they should come to realise that today developement is necessary, instead of religion, castes etc.

grow up Mr prasad.Read few articles on indian constitution. If i follow your logic i see large number of maharastrian working in guj, shall we throw them out and let Bilas rao deshmukh learn that maharashta needs devlopement. What will you call NRI investment in india and particular in maharastra ,betrayal with either country. Amithabh did the same.

Don't justify goondagiri by coolvyakti on 13 Feb 2008

If someone had molested you or your family and your car, you would be singing a different tune, Mr Mohite. There is no justification in hate mongering and intimidation of other citizens. If Raj has a problem, there are more civilized ways of debate and dialog to address those issues. Indian and Indians need to grow up, including yourself - that is if India needs to be counted amongst "mature" nations.
