Mumbai A year before, a few men with guns in their hands had held Mumbai at ransom, causing irreparable damage to life, property and the city’s morale.

A year later, the entire nation has come together to observe the first anniversary of the 26/11 attacks and pay homage to the 166 people who lost their lives.

Making a strong statement that they would not be deterred by terror, Mumbaikars went about doing their daily chores as any other day but also paused in their tracks to honour the memory of those who lost their lives in the devastating 60-hour terror strike last year.

There were a lot of events lined up through the day. A memorial for 18 security personnel, including National Security Guards (NSG) commander Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan is to be unveiled by Union Home Minister P.Chidambaram here.

A ''Suraksha March'' of police and various security agencies is being organized from Gateway of India to Girgaum Chowpatty.

Mumbai Police will hold a peace flag march in a show of strength from Air India building, passing Nariman Point to Girgaum Chowpatty. The march will also include Force One, the Quick Response Team and armoured vehicles.

In Mumbai, the Railway Protection Force personnel paid homage to those slaughtered inside the CST where two terrorists opened fire. Chief Minister Ashok Chavan visited the Trident-Oberoi along with his colleagues to pay homage to those who fell to the bullets fired by the terrorists in the majestic hotel.

The Force One the new crack security force of the State government launched here on Tuesday made its first public appearance by staging a parade from Nariman Point to Chowpatty on Thursday morning.

The state has also organised an all-religious prayer meeting at the Gateway of India in the evening that will be attended by prominent members of society and the masses.

There are many other moments of silence, remembering and mourning slated all over the day, but the morning rush hour showed the resilience of India’s financial and entertainment capital, with commuter trains and buses packed and roads as choked with traffic as ever.

Have the nation learned? by Varghese Joseph on 27 Nov 2009

Its now a year since the Mumbai attacks, and have added one more experience in the history of India, and we have lost many good people who served for the nation and also good citizens and foreigners. We also had the Kargil experiences, there too we lost many good people who served the nation, but only one thing is common, whatever the Govt. have to do in the form of giving compensations to the victims, I doubt its happening in the true spirits. Why so? If its true, thats very shameful. Also we have to make the public more aware about their role how to assist the security forces in case that is very much essential.

political bankruptcy by amit on 27 Nov 2009

Everything was symbolic today. Unfortunately. I cant understand why people are not questioning the arrogance of the politicians who are not concerned about the common man and give stereotyped comments on tv. Where is the systemic improvement which will result in better intelligence and better counteraction. In India unfortunately people in high positions are so full of themselves than importance is not given to developing teams and efficiency. Therefore we are so dependent on individual excellence and not continuous development of our systems. Too much emotion ...but little brain overall. Sad. Very Sad.

Bombay tragedy by azhikunnu ,Germany on 27 Nov 2009

The Bombay tragedy a year ago shows how Pakistan is trying to create problem for India by all means. It knows that India can not be bowed to its knees by any military engagement or by any pressure from its boarder on Kashmir issue. The Bombay incidence teaches us that India should pay attention to its broaders withits neighbours and our broader with Pakisthan and other countries should be srtictly controlled so that nobody from our neighbouring comes to India without proper passports.

This copying of USA by Annoyed on 27 Nov 2009

Such a pity with this imitation of 9/11. All that candle lighting etc. Did anyone do that near rails when they were blown up? The lives of the rich is much more valuable in Mumbai. Just stop all this nonsense. Never heard of any other anniversary rememberances before. Makes me sick.

Lessons which have hopefully been learnt by Rajiv Chatterjee on 26 Nov 2009

If one were to look at 26/11 in retrospect, then two things would stand out: (A) the government apparatus failed miserably and (B) the media (in this case, the electronic media) played its part in a most callous manner. If senior government officials (including senior officers of the Army and Navy) kept giving juicy bites of info (often incorrect at that) to the media to enjoy their 15 seconds of fame, the media itself behaved abominably (barring NDTV, to its credit) by covering the entire rescue mission LIVE ! Not for a moment did these self-proclaimed eyes of the common man think the kind of danger they were putting the brave warriors into. This is true especially of the NSG commandos who rued that in spite of landing on the top of Nariman House from a helicopter, they didnt get any leverage by means of surprise because our media was covering every movement of this elite combat unit! Needless to say, this "LIVE" coverage reached the terrorists as well(and their Pak handlers).

THIS IS ALL NONSENSE... by Vinod on 26 Nov 2009

WHAT A SHAME ! by N.ASTI on 26 Nov 2009

When the country is mourning over the lost lives of great SHAHIDS OF 26/11,the Congress P.M.(Favourite hero of some Media) is enjoying his foreign trip.Congress managed media does not remember this but praises his fruitless trip thro' Editorials.MMS and his puppet Media should learn how to respect the Nation from US behaviour on each 9/11.

Muslims will have themselves destroyed by harun on 26 Nov 2009

The cry from those killed in 26/11 will see pakistan destroyed and humiliated. If at all those pakis are Muslims they will immediately stop encouraging all these forces from indulging in all such actions that bring Islam to ridicule.Who wants these jokers in the world its Indias irony that they have the 2nd Largest population of Muslims and have to put up with them.Just look at the way the pakis have repeatedly denied that the attack is a direct result of The State using Terror as a state policy to counter India. Why havent the jokers who organise protests to protest Dec 6 do the same before the pak embassy today. We have pak and the Islamic world ignoring Indias cries of agony.Animals from pak who used religion to attack children as well on 26/11.Why havent congregations not condemed the way Islam is bieng maligned by the very followers of the faith. The Americans have been the main perpetuators by allowing the pakis to get away with murder.Muslims must be prepared for the worst.

Nation observes first anniversary of 26/11 by N.V.SANKARAN on 26 Nov 2009

No doubt the terrorist attack in Mumbai last year was very bad. But has anybody thought why this "observance of anniversary" of this one alone? The reason is that the perpetrators came from Pakistan. For the secular UPA and media it is inconvenient to observe anniversaries of other terror attacks like Parliament attack, Akshardham attack or the numerous attacks in J & K, because those implicated in those are home-grown Islamic terrorists.

Peace? by Sikhi on 26 Nov 2009

Is it possible we will ever be free of Islamic terrorism- from within and without? It does not look very good. India will have to fight, which clearly they don't like to do.

Congress and Terrorism are inseparable by Bhikharimal Jain on 26 Nov 2009

Congress and terrorism are inseparable. Congress nourishes all kinds of terrorism under the cover of secularism just gain political mileage and to remain in power to reap the benefits of political power. They nourished islamic terrorism and now nourishing linguistic and regionalistic terrorism.

Islamic and Marathi terrrorism posing threat to nation by Mona Sharma on 26 Nov 2009

Last year Raj Thackeray and his Marathi supporters took law into their hands and 10 lakh Hindi speaking people had to flee from Nashik,Thane, and Kalyan. Most of them were beaten up mercilessly and some of them lost their life in the hands of Marathi terrorists. Maharashtra police arrested some miscreants just to show that they are taking action. All the arrested criminals were left unpunished because they were marathis. This is an example how our democracy has been hijacked by Language and Region.

Mumbai Aamchee by Ajay Lotankar on 26 Nov 2009

Me Marathi. Mumbai Majhee and all are outsiders. Only marathis should be given jobs without taking exams and everyone on this planet has to respect marathi language and culture.

Law and Order has been hijacked by Thackerays by Pooja on 26 Nov 2009

Congress and Marathis are trying to take political mileage by encashing public emotions. Thackerays goons are already creating havoc in Bombay. MNS goons, underworld dons and Bombay police have nexus amongst them and making illegal money from common people. They call it Hafta. That is monthly installment.

Another Fool and Selfish North Indian. by Rahul Raut on 27 Nov 2009

Who are those 'publics' referred by you. By the way you have much superior knowledge about the underworld..seems to be you have part of that system :-). Stop making havoc about the son of the soil issue..this is quite natural all over the world. Try to respect those people, culture who had given a lot to you. Stop making any statements by watching movies and sensational news..get to the facts..your comments will be most welcome by all intellectuals.
