N-deal historic, says Bal Thackeray; praises PM

Mumbai, October 3: Describing the Indo-US civilian nuclear deal as "historic" and in "national interest", Shiv Sena Chief Bal Thackeray did not buy his ally BJP's argument that UPA government has compromised the country's sovereignty.

"I don't think there is any truth in this political criticism. The voluntary moratorium on not conducting further nuclear tests was imposed by our government," Thackeray said in an editorial in his party mouthpiece 'Saamna'.

Thackeray, however, said only voters will decide whether the Congress and Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh will derive any political benefit due to this "historic" deal. The octogenarian leader said the deal has opened horizons of nuclear trade for India.

"This deal should be viewed in this respect only. Due to the NSG waiver, India can procure reactors and nuclear technology to tackle energy shortage from various countries. American trade and commerce will get a fillip while India can provide for its energy security. Because of the NSG waiver, India can ink nuclear pacts with the member countries," he said.

Praising Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, Thackeray said he staked his integrity and honesty for the deal. "He has already clarified issues related to 123 agreement and the Hyde Act. Even though the Congress can't be trusted, the same yardstick cannot be applied to the Prime Minister," he added.

nuclear deal and bal thackeray by mb on 04 Oct 2008

Akalis always toe the BJP line. they should take a leaf out of bal thackeray's book. the man made a bold statement. manmohan ji has always clarified the deal in parliament with opposition as well as comrades which went on for years and wasted so much time. its good that the deal is cleared during bush's time. we all stand to benefit from this.

It seems Senility is catching up. by Viswanath on 04 Oct 2008

Mr.Baltackerays praise of Manmohan Singh is untimely and counter productive at a time when India is smarting under the deals coming through. While it might remove the isolation India is facing ,the economic burden it is going to slap on the common man is yet to understand thanks to Manmohans studious silence on this issue. As a PM of the country he enjoys certain privileges to take decisions ,he has forgotten the parliamnet decency of taking the opposition into confidence while negotiating with US.It seems like a private deal between Manmohan and Bush with hidden agendas and benefits to both parties.Since both these leaders are on their way out from power it seems the issue lacks any transparency .What ever Manmohan says doubt lingers as he has prooved by now that he is not as innocent or gentleman as he project to be.Time alone will tell who is right.Time being we have to take this with a pinch of salt.

Nuclear Pact with USA by Dhanvinder Bajwa on 04 Oct 2008

Yes,Shri Balasaheb Thakeray is absolutely correct and i appreciate his boldness and understanding of the pact.It is obveiously in Indian interest.Just see how Middle East Oil Giants are blackmailing the rest of the world for oil.Oil prices are much above the production, marketing and profit.Oil should not be selling higher than USD 50.00 at the worst.India will become superpower in Power field by generating power and depending less on oil thus this pact is definately beneficial.Let politicians play their slander campaign.Dr.M.M.Singh is the primeminister who should be worshipped and i suggest temple be buit in india.I pray for his long life nad request all like minded citizens to allow him to carry out one more term as PM of India.Rahul Wahul kucchh kam ke nahi hai Bhaiyaa.
