Sodium is opaque and burns on contact with air or water, designing reactors and their maintenance to take these properties into account has made them costly to build and maintain. It also makes them susceptible to serious fires and long shutdowns - the French Superphenix reactor operated for less than one year during the first 10 years after it was commissioned. Large fast-breeder reactors have a positive sodium void co-efficient. What this means is that, if for some reason the sodium were to heat up and vapourise, then it would increase the reactivity of the core of the reactor. If the operating system failed to insert control rods fast enough, the increased reactivity would, in turn, heat up the sodium further; this chain could ultimately cause a fuel meltdown into a supercritical configuration and will result in nuclear explosion. The fuel plutonium is about 30,000 times more radioactive than uranium-235 and this requires precautions during the costly fabrication of fuel.

If India could build Thorium plant then why are we waiting to build one? Why did we go to USA to negotiate nuclear deal in the first place. That was the approach of both UPA and NDA govt. The bottom line reason for Chernobyl accident and in Russia and Three Mile accident in USA is that there were no senior and experienced Engineers present to take corrective action when the initial signs were seen. Like our Indian Army, IAS Cadre, the Atomic Energy is also facing a shortage of very good Engineers and Scientists because of the very low salaries of ClassI service. Going ahead with a nuclear power programme is inviting a major disaster like Chernobyl in India. Nuclear power is also five times costly than convensional power. Added to this the nuclear waste disposal and disposal of the entire plant cost more money than one can imagine. Recently in USA one nuclear plant was shut down due to lack of water supply. All nuclear plants require abundant supply of water. Even our nuclear plant coming up in TN is getting water by desalination and is not cost effective. Another major aspect is that all nuclear plants are susceptible to terrorist attacks and cannot be stopped if two groups of suicide bombers attack the plant at the same time. With the higher efficienties of solar power panels, and the new type of sprayon panels solar power is much more cost effective and environmentally friendly

USA has alternative energy sources such as coal and they already have ample nucler power plants which are working at full capacity. All of their homes have ample electricity. Can India boast of that? Does India's nuclear power plant work at full capacity? Do villages have electricity? Does India have any plans for future growth without nuclear energy or are they going to depend on Iranian pileline which goes through hostile territories with unreliable partners such as Pakistan and Iran? France is powered mostly by Nuclear energy and have proved it to be safe. What does India have other than some people only know how to boast and do nothing! WE Indians should do something right for a change and sign the nuclear deal and make progress possible

I have only one question from all those so eager to sign this deal. If Nuclear Energy is such a Bed of Roses - Why USA has not approved any new Nuclear Power Plant on its soil for last 30 years.

I had negotiated and procured Uranium fuel for India when one of the foreign government refused to give us fuel in spite of the written agreement saying that India has not signed the NPT. There is plenty of U in africa which we can procure. We can develop our own mines in NE and AP. Our long term programme is based on Thorium which is converted to U233 in our breeder reactorss and even in CIRUS reactor. USA have not developed the Thorium technology. I was part of India's Pokhraan Project on the development of nuclear weapons, I know what I am talking about. Only the fools will jump in to the offer of USA.

The treaty should be signed only if it protects India's self interest. India is a mature democracy and must not be coerced into any treaty either by the prospect of rejection by the US Congress or the USG refusing to deal with India at US' dictate. India has the right to think through the treaty in all aspects that would impact the country's future before its is signed.

I do not think that any treaty can be given an indefinite period for ratification.US senators are asking Indian Govt to ratify the deal so that Bush can seal the deal before relinquishing hisoffice.International treaties do follow certainroad map.If India has got certain reservationsthey should say so and get out of the treaty.It is better ,at times,to buy the technology of the shelf rather than developing it.The discussionin the article is not to analyse merits/demerits of N-Energy but Is US justified in asking India to seal the deal by May.

Time to say NO to Nuclear Energy now. Although I do not agree with Krishna's forum hijacking tactics to get the point across. And I am no Commie to oppose it coz I have some sleazy agenda. But we have to rise above the politics to see the pitfalls of Nuclear Energy. Even if we can make it 99% safe. That 1% chance is scary and costly enough to say NO to it. People will talk about France's Nuclear program, but let me tell you France has swallowed the poison pill due to desperation. They don't have much hydro/solar/bio options. But India shouldn't get so desperate. Technology is moving very fast and viable cheap Energy Options are not very far from reality. By all means we should build Nuclear Weapons - but that we can do without USA's help

It is an intersting thought by Raja. India is a sovereign country and hence has the rights to an independent foreign policy. It is in the same right that India wants to pursue the import of Uranium from the NSG without being a signatory of the NPT. This is practically not possible without US approval. This Nuclear treaty is all about it. India ratifying this treaty will force France, Britain and may be even Australia to get in line. This treaty gives lot's of leeway to India to pursue both Weapon grade enrichment and Power with just the caveat that uranium imported from NSG members cannot be used for Nuclear Weapons Program. US and French reactors are very much needed in India as they have the next gen reactors and whose safety and reliability is second to none. This is not possible without this treaty.

Who the hell do US senetors think they are.We in Pakistan suffered a lot by so called American friendship.Americas friends have suffered defeat in Pak.American senetors are nobody to dictate or implement their deals forcefully.India is a sovereign state.They should keep in mind.
