Kolkata, January 13: The country needed a third alternative outside the Congress and the BJP, CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat said and called for greater unity of the Left parties towards that end.

"We have a communal party like BJP on one side and a party of capitalists like the Congress on the other. We need a third alternative. This can be achieved only if the Left unity is strengthened," Karat said at an open rally on the eve the CPI(M)'s 22nd state conference.

"For this, all the left parties must unite on the lines of the one in West Bengal. While all Front partners have a responsibility towards this, CPI(M), being the largest constituent, has a bigger responsibility," he said.

Accusing the Congress-led UPA government of failing to redress the problems faced by common people despite the nine per cent GDP growth, he said the Centre was indifferent to the suicide of nearly two lakh farmers over the last 10 years.

The Centre was trying to stop PDS and open the retail sector to big investors. If this happens, lakhs of small traders would be wiped out, he said.

"So, we are telling the government to take steps to properly implement the Common Minimum Programme. But if it tries to open the banking, insurance, agriculture and retail sectors to foreign investments, we will not agree," he said.

Dream on Karat et al by Jojo on 14 Jan 2008

Dream on Karat. The one state that you are ruling (that too forcibly) is becoming poorer. What India needs is not nut-cases like you and your buddies, but all round development. You guys cry conspiracy at every mention of the D (development) word. Man, do you not see the havoc caused by Communism across the world? Are you guys blind and deaf? I am sure you are. Thats why you are not fit to head any government.

The "Family," Prakash Karat and the Third Front by Hary Nambiar on 14 Jan 2008

All that Nehru did in 17 years was to ensure that his daughter became his heir. His 17 year rule was a distaster for India from which India could never recover. His daughter's rule was not different in respect of economic development. India had gained one advantage because of the British colonialisation, which was stopping the Islamization of India and total annihilation of Hindus. As soon as Nehru came to power, India lost all that advantage. He made sure that all British left India on the night of August 14, 1947, but was unconcerned by the slaughter of Hindus in West and East Pakistan and did nothing to help the influx of millions of refugees from Pakistan. On the contrary, he allowed the Muslims to live, multiply and prosper in India. While Muslims enjoyed more rights as minorities in India, the fraction of what was the Hindu population in Pakistan and Bangla Desh has no right to own property. Their property is classified as "Enemy Property." He prevented people from other parts of India from buying land and settling in Kashmir. While he caused extinction of numerous cultural and social heritages in India, he suppressed Indian enterpreneurship by various draconian laws in the name of monopolies and restrictive trade practices. The most unpardonable contribution of Nehru to India was brain washing Indians agaisnt the so called "western imperialism." But for Nehru's lack of foresight, China could annex Tibet, invade India and the worms in Pakistan could rise against India and India would not have been such an economic distaster for more than half a century. We grew up believing that Nehru was a flambouyant, British educated hero, but he was a total disaster, ignorant of economic and political realitiesDr. Manmohan Singh is the interim leader until the Indian people are manipulated enough to clamour for the "Pattabhikesham" of the "Yuva Raja" of Nehru dynasty. Until that time comes, Dr. Singh will continue, probably till his death or replacement. I believe, Prakash Karat knows this very well and is poising to take over with the support of Congress. In the current political climate, a vote for Congress, Communist, DMK, RJD, NCP, RJD(P), JD(U), Muslim League, Samajwadi Party or the BSP will be disastrous for the people of India. Leaders of each of the ruling political alliance has a heir apparent. Prakash Karat's call for a "third front" is a distraction. Prakash and Sonia have a great rapport. Therefore, I believe, in a Coalition of Congress, Communist, DMK, RJD (Yadav), Samajwadi Party, JD(U) and NCP, Prakash Karart could easily be the leader with the blessing of Congress President. This is a win-win situation to both the "Family" and Mr. Karat. I wonder where will Telugu Desham party and BSP stand in this equation. Therefore, I am afraid, this combination will present a formidable anti Indian force. That is what all the all India haters would be happy to see.

Karat Keep dreaming by Danny Sharma on 14 Jan 2008

Karat has freedom to dream, whatever he wants to. India needs growth and that will come to India no matter Congress or BJP heading the government. If the nation wants to grow and be seen as a matured, country we need to keep left out of the federal government.

MY MESSAGE TO COMRADE KARAT AND HIS FELLO COMMUNIST LEADERS by A.Mahadevan on 14 Jan 2008

Free people of India want to keep a free country. Only two parties are commited to adhereing to build an all inclusive secular democratic free India. The communism is unaccepagale by the people since it is a brutal oppressive violent system with no respect to basic human values. Karat and his comrades should emigrate to a communist country to enjoy their cherished ideals of violent and sadistic lifestyle.

Third Front by Krishan K Arora on 13 Jan 2008

The Left believes in double-standards. Their Govt in Bengal is also capitalistic now. Third Fron idea is propped up them just to see that the regional parties like SP, RJD, TDP, BJD etc should feel independent of their major allies like BJP or Congress. No one will take the Left any more seriously now onwards.
