Needle of suspicion on a close relative

New Delhi, March 16 It is the second time in the last four years that Bijender Kaliraman, father of nine-year-old Sanjeev who was murdered at Sungarpur village near Alipur on Thursday night, is trying to come to terms with life after a murder in the family. In 2004, he lost his sister, Anju, who was allegedly shot dead by her husband, Dharmender Kumar.

During questioning of Sanjeev’s family members and relatives, the police got to know about this family feud and are taking the matter seriously. They suspect Dharmender, who is out on bail at present, may be behind the boy’s murder as he had allegedly threatened Bijender earlier to eliminate his entire family.

Dharmender had allegedly killed Anju at his Mundka residence in 2004 after a tiff — he had also shot dead his brother’s wife, whose name was also Anju, on the same day. A case was registered at the Nangloi police station and he was arrested. He is standing trial in a Delhi court.

The police have taken the FIR from their Nangloi counterparts and are verifying the case. “We are working on this angle. He will be questioned,” said an officer. They, however, said Dharmender was not seen in the Bakhtawarpur area on the day of the incident and had not visited the Kaliramans in a long time.

Sanjeev’s family members at Bakhtawarpur, however, did not make any comment on the matter. “I don’t want to say anything about it. Police are doing their investigation,” said his uncle Jai Singh.

Sources in the Outer district of Delhi Police, who are investigating the case, said Dharmender used to have frequent fights with Anju and was also seen arguing with Bijender and others in the family several times.

The charred body of Sanjeev, a student of Class II at Rishikul Public School in Alipur, was found in the fields of Sungarpur village on Thursday night. There was tension in the area as his family initially suspected some inebriated people who had come from Meerut (UP) to attend a wedding in Sungarpur to be behind the murder.

The police, however, ruled out that possibility, though they sent a team to Meerut for investigating the angle. They said the team was still in Meerut but it had not found anything substantial against the wedding guests till now.

On Saturday, the police found a liquor bottle from the fields where Sanjeev was killed, which led to suspicion that the killers poured alcohol on his body before setting him on fire. The body was almost charred beyond recognition, the reason why the postmortem is taking time.

On Sunday too, the police picked up several persons for questioning.
