Mumbai, February 3 Second in demand Hotstepper stepped in to continue the millennium jinx for favorites. The four-year-old son of Glory Of Dancer managed to pip Sweeping Success on the post to claim the richest race in the country, the McDowell Indian Derby at the Mahalaxmi Race Course on Sunday.

As the roar of about 15,000 fans threatened to bring the roof down at the Race Course stands, old English hand Mick Kinane was first to finish. He had to fight for every inch as Sweeping Success, ridden by B Prakash, was in hot pursuit in the last 300 meters. But Kinane managing to put the colts head in front at the crucial juncture.

“I just thought of a win as my horse was really travelling well in those crucial moments,” told Kinane soon after he dismounted. “The race could have gone either way,” felt Karthik Ganapthy who has had a long association with Sweeping Success.

As the gates opened, Ruby Queen, the Hyderabad challenger, missed the kick and got out late. Earl Of Warwick led the field initially followed by Noble Prince and Sweeping Success. Kinane who had settled in back bunch, gradually started to improve his position.

As the contenders started to negotiate the bend, Sweeping Success took charge and Mountain Bear just behind. Soon Kinane and Hotstepper came with a telling strides to pass Mountain Bear and join the Sweeping Success to dispute the lead. They fought neck to neck till the post.

Favourite Bourbon King too came with giants strides towards the end but could only occupy fourth berth. “He was stuck in traffic and got the clear passage late,” explained Ganapathy.
