Nepal party accuses BJP of trying to sabotage polls

Chennai, February 18: The Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) on Tuesday charged the Sangh Parivar outfits in India as well as the US with trying to "sabotage" the April elections to the Constituent Assembly of that country.

"Elections have been postponed thrice... The US and the BJP and its sister organisations such as VHP and RSS in India do not want the elections to be held for their own vested interests," top-rung Maoist leader and party's central committee member C P Gajurel alleged.

While the US wanted to make Nepal a base with an aim to control India and China, the Sangh Parivar wanted Nepal to remain a Hindu nation, he told reporters in Chennai.

Gajurel had come to the city to attend a meeting of an Indo-Nepalese forum.

He also charged the "Hindu fundamentalists" with creating violence in some parts of the country, especially those close to Bihar and Uttar Pradesh in order to sabotage the polls.

"We, by the electoral process, want to make Nepal a people's republic and abolish the 240-year-long monarchy. But elections have been already postponed thrice and if they are not held on April 10, we would initiate a mass movement in the country," he said.

However, he ruled out any armed struggle, which the Maoists had resorted to while opposing the monarchy earlier, saying "the arms were locked in the containers while the cadre confined to cantonments".

"Years of people's war (armed struggle) resulted in a mass movement, paving way for people's rule. Those who are supporting the monarchy, including some Generals in the Royal Nepalese Army, do not want elections to be held as that will put an end to feudalism in Nepal," Gajurel said.

Responding to a query, Gajurel said there was "no clear evidence" on the direct hand of the government of India in "attempts" to sabotage the elections.

Further, "we have taken up with India, the efforts of the fundamentalists, and some provocative firing by the CRPF on the Indo-Nepalese border," Gajurel, who had been once lodged in a Chennai prison, said.

On the Maoist movement in India, Gajurel said the Nepali Maoists were ideologically similar to the former, but desisted from "making suggestions to them".

The Maoist leader also called for support from the people of India, the European Union (EU) and other global powers for the successful conduct of the elections in April.
