Pictures and reports of the molestation of the two NRI women on New Year’s Eve in Mumbai and the subsequent investigations have been splashed across the newspapers and channels in the last week. But Zubin Driver, network creative director of Network 18 group, feels that without sustained action, it’s all water off a duck’s back. On his part, Driver has begun with a small idea. “I had this strong urge to make the protest and awareness an ongoing process. Our team’s campaign for this month is fighting back against gender violence. We will set up the project but it’s up to the masses to respond with feedback.”

As part of the campaign, an online portal, fight-back.net, aims to create awareness on the legal procedures involved in gender violence, regulations of the law, avenues for free legal aid, medical procedure and so on. Apart from being simple and interactive, the website will make it multilingual. Driver says, “This campaign is primarily targetedat the youth and all those individuals sensitive to the problem including NGOs, cops and social activists. Experts in the field will share case studies.”

To start with, the posters will be displayed at college campuses and hoardings, with thought-provoking statistics across the city. Driver is convinced that technology is the best networking tool. “We will be tapping all youth-related portals like Facebook, Orkut and other blogs to create awareness. The youth are not jaded with the bureaucracy,” he says. Already, the Sophia College management have responded positively to their approach.

Creative minds who feel strongly about gender violence, can come up with short films, documentaries and plays. The best ones will be screened on their weekly programme Through the Looking Glass. The theme of the nation-wide contest will revolve around gender violence. Adding that there is no age limit, he says, “Tactics or preventive measures, past cases of molestation and so on—the directors are free to choose their own themes. Ideally, it should be shot and screenedin neighbourhoods that the creators are familiar with. Such details make the film relevant and help in bringing out a systematic change.”

The college students are more than excited about being part of the initiative. Naina Meattle from Sophia College feels that women fail to protest against the injustice due to some kind of inhibition or fear of the society. She says, “This is a very good platform for the youth to express their views.” Another young enthusiast Saumya Bhatnagar (20), a media student says, “The project will make women aware of their rights and what they can do when any such injustice occurs.”
