Mumbai The new host country of the Indian Premier League and the schedule of its 59 Twenty20 matches will be out by Monday evening, IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi said.

The league will be held either in South Africa or England after security apprehensions owing to a clash of dates with the general elections forced the organisers to take the April 10-May 24 event out of India.

"We will have the final schedule and which country will host the IPL by Monday evening. We have multiple schedules, multiple venues, multiple countries available to us. Now we just need to re-schedule the matches. Each team will have a home in another country, another state and another stadium," Modi told reporters after meeting the eight franchise owners.

Modi insisted that the ‘made-for-television event’ would be held taking into account the prime-time slot in India.

"I guarantee that the first match will start at 4.00 pm India time and the second match will be held 8.00 pm India time, at prime time for all the fans to be able to watch them," he said.

Modi refused to blame any one for the IPL's shift of venue and insisted that the tournament will be back in the country next year.

"I don't blame anybody for anything. Let's not politicize the issue," he said.

Govt equates India with Pakistan by Ajay on 23 Mar 2009

In one stroke, the India has been put into the same league as Pakistan. This has been done none other than the jokers in BCCI and govt of India. Pakistan and terrorists must be having the last laugh.

Lalit Modi takes IPL forign tour- by K. K. GHOSH on 23 Mar 2009

SAIYAA BHAIYE KOTWAL TO DAR KAHEYKA ? Lalit Modijee why you need to worry if Powerful Pawar Sahab is behind you to take such a decision to shift IPL? But you without your own base in your State Rajisthan, where you have lost in Election, you are quite young to show the State and Country that you are still as powerful as any body else in BCCI. We do not appreciate and we do not agree to your this decision to shift IPL, please note.

What a Shame! by Mike Vig on 23 Mar 2009

This is so grievously serious. Now we are seen as bad as the Pakistanis when it comes to security and staging International events. The babus in the Election Commission and the politicians in the government have no shame, no respect for the image of the country. One is out to prove a point; other is too busy to pay attention to the image of the country. Working together with the right mindset could accommodate all events. But, as usual, we fail collectively.

money making can't wait by manoj on 23 Mar 2009

money is more important. the country refused to provide us security on demand!

Cricket thrown out of India by Haresh on 23 Mar 2009

It will be a sad day for Inida when cricket a "religion" of India is moved out of the country. This is nothing but politics. The image of India as "Incredible India" will be tarnished because it is not able to provide security. There is therefore,no difference between India and Pakistan, where cricketers donot go and India throws out the cricket. There is still time to think and to give security to the cricket grounds. India is to hold commonwealth games in 2010.This will certainly have an adverse effect on the games. Think again.

IPL CRICKET MATCHES by S Rao on 23 Mar 2009

What about Sri Lanka’s covert military alliance with India’s hostile neighbours to fu*k India? The recent attack on the Sri Lanka’s cricket team in Lahore was stage-managed by the non-state actors of Pakistan with the full help of Pakistan’s military (with the full knowledge of Lanka govt) as the safe covert route to stop the IPL matches. India, NATO, the Russian Federation

Actual reasons are different by Sujit on 23 Mar 2009

The Govt. decision of not providing security to IPL during election is neither due to shortage of forces and nor decision of IPL management to shift the tournament out of country is because of Govt. decision. There is something more in it and one should read between the lines. Govt. denial is due to the fact that IPL matches will become the largest crowd puller and no public will be available in election rallies of politicians making those rallies a flop shows. Decision of IPL management to shift it out side country is because a large number of foreign players have conveyed their reluctance to participate in India after Lahore episode. Not shifting the tournament will make it a flop show in absence of foreign stars.

IPL by Sushant Pandit on 23 Mar 2009

I dont understand one thing. If IPL earned billions as profit last year then why does n't it spend its own money to give security? It could offset the increased expenditure by slightly increasing the ticket prices as well as giving more advert time both in TV as well on ground between change overs. The refusal to foot its own bill smells of greed.

IPL Shift...right move by Varun Mehta on 22 Mar 2009

Smart move...this guy Lalit Modi is a real deal cracker..he managed to shift such an event with huge logistics involved in no time. I trust this is the right decision as this will remove the apprehensions of some foreign players to participate because of security fears and the government is not burdened to provide cover for the IPL amidst the elections. After all the show has to move on....and hats off to the IPL adminstrators, especially to Lalit Modi

IPL DECESION by V.V.MATHEW on 22 Mar 2009

QUIT IF INCAPABLE OF ENSURING SECURITY FOR IPL by AK Singh on 22 Mar 2009

n any organisation if any particular employee declares that he cannot perform a legitimate task he is told to step aside and the responsibility is entrusted to somebody else who can complete the task. Would MR Chithambaram and all the CMs and Police officers who declared their inability to provide security for IPL step aside and hand over responsibility to some one else???It has been the endeavor of Pakistan to equate with India in everything and here we have a govt which openly accept it.

Outlandish by Mike Vig on 22 Mar 2009

This is so shameful. While the politicians are busy in their own affairs, the BCCI simply gave in to the autocratic ways of the government. IPL belongs to India and has no business in another country. This is outrageously ridiculous news of the day.

National shame by Sinha on 22 Mar 2009

What a shame..!!! The UPA led by the Congress party, has almost made India another Pakistan. Who will ever tour India again? And what next? If they are mid-term elections in two years time would we also scrap the commonwealth games? Can we ever host another major event after such a fiasco? The elections are a mere excuse to hide the failure of this government to provide basic security to the citizens. The wily congress party knows that if even a minor incident happens during the IPL it would loose precious votes from the cricket loving people of this country. It is easier to cancel the event than take any risk. So they are playing it safe, regardless of the damage to India's reputation all over the world. Its like saying that if everyone stays indoors, terrorism will automatically stop. Doob maro congressiyon..

International Premier League! by Emmveeyem on 22 Mar 2009

A sensible decision. After all elections cannot be rescheduled and if the government is dilly dallying on giving a nod to the re-drawn itinerary of IPL, what other option is left for IPL than to carry its customs and go global. The biggest losers are the Indians, who are the ardent follwers of the game and several service providers who will have to forego a lot of earnings. In a way, IPL will become "International Premier League" which will insulate it from political whimsys.

Trapped by Saad on 22 Mar 2009
