Vadodara, June 19 The Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) General Board unanimously elected BJP councillor from Khanderao Market area, Balu Shukla (45), as its new mayor on Thursday. The BJP high command, post its Parliamentary Board meet, chose Shukla for the top job at the 69-year-old civic body.

Surprisingly, Shukla's name didn't even figure in the list of six names submitted by party leaders and MLAs to the high command. All the 87 councillors at VMC, including that of Congress and independents, unanimously elected Shukla as its 23rd mayor, after the present mayor, Sunil Solanki's term ended on June 18. The new mayor represents Ward no. 18 of VMC and will take over charge from outgoing mayor, Sunil Solanki, whose term ended on June 18. Shukla is also an administrative consultant. "I will see to it that ongoing development projects get expedited and quicker end results are brought for the citizens," said Shukla.

A Geology graduate and a final year Human Resources MBA student, Shukla is a first time councillor with the VMC. "Shukla is known for his clean image and has a humble background. This might have weighed heavily in his favour, as chief minister Modi tries to bring in new blood into the administration," informed VMC sources.

Shukla is an RSS volunteer since 1968 and associated with the BJP since 1996. He was the Vadodara BJP Yuva Morcha president in 1996-1998, and Vadodara BJP secretary in 1998-2000. He was a member of different VMC committees including the Standing Committee, which approves and implements projects.
