Amritsar, January 1 The panghura (cradle) system, a plan of providing shelter to the abandoned girl child, today took off in the border town with DC KS Pannu installing a cradle in front of the Red Cross office here.

Anybody who could not bring up a girl child should put her in the basket and then ring the electric bell, said Pannu.

“Due to deteriorating values in the society, newborn girls were being thrown in dustbins or bushes. The Red Cross has taken an initiative to look after such children and special funds are being earmarked for it,” he said, adding that the initiative would be replicated in other districts too.

Various social and senior personalities were present during the function. Pannu also said the ‘panghura’ was a New Year gift to the unwanted girl children. “We need help of the NGOs and social organisations to make the initiative a major success,” said Pannu, adding that special arrangements were being made for their upbringing.
