Wellington, March 15: New Zealand all-rounder Jacob Oram was fined 20 per cent of his match fee after being found guilty of dissent during the second Test against England, the International Cricket Council (ICC) said on Saturday.

Oram pleaded guilty to the offence after being charged for showing 'serious dissent at an umpire's decision' when he was given out LBW by umpire Steve Davis off the bowling of paceman Ryan Sidebottom.

The ICC said Oram openly showed dissent at the decision by looking at his bat then punching it.

Oram apologised to the umpires and ICC match referee Javagal Srinath agreed to reduce the level of the charge from serious dissent to dissent.

"I took into account several factors in downgrading the charge including the player's previously excellent conduct, his apology at the hearing, the fact it was a spontaneous act out of character with his normal behaviour and he did not appear to use foul or offensive language," Srinath said in a statement released by the ICC after Saturday's hearing.

"However, the fact remains that when the umpire raises his finger a player must leave the crease immediately and without question no matter what he may think of the decision."

Indian referee has guts like the English and South Africans! by Jolly on 17 Mar 2008

It is all OK to fine NZ or Indian or even English Cricketers. Will Srinath or the umpires have the guts to penalise an Aussie player in a similar (or even a worse) situation? I have never seen that happening in my long life time. May be the timid Indian or Pakistami referees will have the guts to act suitably in the future! They must take lessons from South African and English referees who are very good in this regard.

NewZealander Oram .... by Mr.Raghavaiyer Subramanian on 16 Mar 2008

Witj all these modern technology available these kind of false decisons by umpires must be allowed to be contested by concerning players and the team.A bad decision and a wrong "out" will cost and is costing the team, the nation concerned, the audience, the advertisers, the companies and institutions involved with the match millions of world currencies. The match refree should , who ever he or she is, must rewrite the written rules- which is outdated, obviously- by realising the reality of the pros and corns of the decision - wrong decision by the umpire, I mean and save all these wastage of pride, money and time for EVERYONE.
