It houses the Department of East Asian Studies, which is busy making language courses more career and knowledge-oriented to ensure students can have successful career. The silver-lining lies in the fact that students graduating in any course can take up the language courses provided by the department.

The Department runs part-time, full-time, MA, M.Phil and PhD courses in Japanese, Korean and Chinese and over the last two years it has introduced scholarship schemes and internship facilities. This year they have introduced a new scholarship by the MHRD and internships have also been introduced for the first time.

Post-graduate students have got internships with ORF, ICWA and IDSA among others. “We don’t realise it but there is a huge requirement in the market for people who are skilled in foreign languages,” says Shruti, an M.Phil student who is currently doing research as part of her internship with Institute of Defense Studies and Analysis on India-China relationship.

The department plans to introduce MA in Chinese but that may take a couple of years, says Anita Sharma, the Officiating Head.

The Department has announced admissions for all its courses, including the undergraduate as well as the post-graduate courses. The undergraduate diploma courses of one-year durations are more popular and are taken up by researchers, businessmen and corporate employees who have to visit foreign countries regularly. The last date of submission of forms is June 26.

The classes are held between 8 am 9.30 am so that they do not clash with regular classes. Recently, the centre also signed a MoU with Universities in China to facilitate student exchange programmes.

While several DU colleges offer part-time language courses, an audio-visual laboratory sets the Department apart. “We have cassettes and CDs through which students are exposed to the correct way of speaking a language,” adds Sharma.

Submission of forms doubles
Delhi University officials’ prediction has come true. The number of forms submitted to the University has not only picked up in two days, but has doubled. On Day 1 of the admissions, 800 forms were received, on Day 3, the number climbed to 4,264 forms. It is a jump of almost hundred per cent from yesterday’s 2,488 forms received.

Counselling and consolation
Following the annual DU trend of hosting Open Day session, an event to promote exchange of information between students and administration, Acharya Narendra Dev College in Kalkaji held last Open Day today. While, the Open Day was a success, at North Campus aspirants had a tough time because most of the counselors had gone to the Open Day event . The only consolation was the telephone helpline that ran smoothly through the day.
