The Delhi International Airport Ltd, the company upgrading the airport, has decided to segregate the pick-up and drop points. With nearly 55,000 people walking in and out of the airport every day, an estimated 4,500 private cars passing through the domestic airport and more than 1,500 taxis clogging the premises, traffic management was a nightmare.
“It was a bottleneck that had been creating problem for a long time especially during the peak traffic hour,” said Arun Arora, corporate communications, DIAL. At most airports abroad, the pick up and drop points are separated to ensure no snarls.
The police have also directed that cars leaving the airport between 5 pm and 10 pm will no longer go straight towards the Dwarka roundabout but turn left at the first roundabout towards Delhi Cantonment. They will then will have to take a U-turn at the first red light, pass the Dwarka underpass and merge with the traffic from that direction.
To unclog the area, DIAL has also decided to set up a new slot for taxis. Ten taxis can stand simultaneously diagonally to each other at the new place, thereby reducing the passenger’s waiting time for cabs. In the old system, taxis used to inch one by one in front of the pre-paid counter.
