Chandigarh, February 11 To ensure effective participation of ward committees in the process of development, the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has formed a sub-committee headed by a councillor to look into the ways and means to make these committees more effective. The sub-committee will submit its recommendations in a month.

Mayor Pardeep Chhabra today formed the sub-committee comprising five councillors and municipal secretary, to be the convenor of the committee which will look into the various aspects regarding the malfunctioning of ward committees. The committee will submit its recommendations within one month.

Congress councillor Anu Chatrath will head this sub-committee. Other members of the committee include former Mayor Harjinder Kaur, Councillor Gurcharan Dass Kala, Councillor Sarita Devi, nominated Councillor Brig Kuldeep Singh Chandpuri (retd) and Municipal Secretary P K Sharma.

Ward Committee was constituted last year with the objective to ensure their effective participation in the process of development. But over the period of time, the committees failed to contribute much.

Chatrath said it was observed that required action was not being taken on the recommendations of the ward committees. She said the committee would make recommendations to make them more effective in the process of development by ensuring the participation of the MC officials in the meetings of ward committees.

Mayor Pardeep Chhabra said the committee has been constituted to make suggestions to ensure participation of city residents in the development process. He said committee has been asked to look into the reasons that prevented the committees to perform as per the expectations.
