New world-class terminal to come up at city airport

Chandigarh, January 3 The Airport Authority of India has taken up the prestigious project for the construction of a new integrated terminal building to cater to 400 passengers at a time , 200 arriving passengers and 200 departing passengers, at an estimated cost of Rs 79.97 crore.

The new world-class terminal building, with an area of 12,150 sqm, will be centrally air-conditioned with all modern passenger-friendly facilities, including passenger-boarding bridges with visual docking guidance system, escalators, elevators, in-line baggage conveyor system in the arrival as well as departure hall, CCTV, FIDS and car-parking facilities.

At present, Chandigarh Airport belongs to the IAF while the AAI maintains a civil air terminal.

The existing terminal building has a capacity to cater to 200 passengers and an apron to park two AB-320 and one ATR-72 aircraft. The AAI has further proposals to expand the apron to accommodate four AB-321 aircraft and other associated works subject to transfer of land from the Defence.

The AAI has major plans to develop a civil enclave at Chandigarh to international standards. The Punjab Government has been requested to give approximately 300 acres of land, identified on the other side of the runway with independent access from the city side.

The AAI has planned the following facilities:

(i) Construction of international terminal building with a modular design to cater to 700 passengers with four passenger-boarding bridges
(ii) Construction of apron for parking three in-contact and eight remote-parking stands for wide bodied jet aircraft
(iii) Construction of three link taxiways.
(iv) Parallel taxi track
(v) Cargo complex and Hangers of Flying Club activities, etc. and
(vi) Runway extension, if required, subject to availability of land from IAF and UT

The Memorandum of Understanding between the AAI and Greater Mohali Area Development Authority is being signed on January 4, 2008, at Chandigarh for the development of international civil air terminal complex at Mohali.

A JV Company with 51 per cent equity stake of the AAI and 49 per cent equity stake of GMADA will be formed to develop and operate an international civil air terminal at Mohali (Chandigarh), including city side development in \Punjab. GMADA would acquire the required land from the state government and hand over to the JV Company.
