Onboard PM's Special Aircraft, January 16: Next Lok Sabha elections in 24 states will be held in the newly redrawn constituencies, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said on Tuesday night but he was not sure whether Karnataka assembly elections could be held in the realigned segments.

Speaking to reporters while returning from China, he said Delimitation Commission has completed the exercise with regard to 25 states. But in Jharkhand, several political parties have complained that the delimitation exercise will create more tensions because the number of tribal seats is going to be reduced.

"Therefore, we have to find ways and means so that Jharkhand can go to polls on the basis of existing delimitation," he said.

For the other 24 states, the intention was that the delimitation proposed by the Delimitation Commission will form the basis of next parliamentary elections, Singh said.

As far as four north-eastern states -- Assam, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland -- delimitation has not taken place because there were court injunctions, Singh said.

"Even after the injunctions have been lifted there are problems and there also we felt that delimitation may not be pursued. So elections will take place there on the basis of existing constituencies," he said.

To a question on assembly elections in Karnataka, he said he was not sure about assembly elections but Lok Sabha elections will take place on the basis of redrawn constituencies.

Asked whether Parliamentary elections will take place this year or 2009, Singh said he was not an astrologer but sincerely hoped that his government would have a chance to complete the full term.

On reports of new States Reorganisation Commission being constituted, he said there was a Congress Working Committee recommendation made in this regard three years ago but no decision has been taken.

Asked about chances of a Cabinet reshuffle after Republic Day, the Prime Minister said, "You will come to know when we do it."
