Mumbai, February 18 The Mumbai University appears to be the next in the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena’s line of vision. For, while the university is yet to appoint a permanent registrar, the students’ wing of the MNS has now suggested that this post should be occupied by a “Maharashtrian or someone who has an understanding of the state’s society and culture and has a sound knowledge of Marathi”.

“There are three to four university professors who are Marathis and have all the credentials of becoming the next registrar. The university should think of them also instead of making the in-charge person permanent because they think he’s the only person who has all the capabilities,” said Sudhakar Tamboli, vice-president of the Maharashtra Navnirman Vidyarthi Sena (MNVS). Currently, K Venkatramani is the in-charge registrar of the University of Mumbai.

Elaborating, Tamboli said that instead of merely making the in-charge registrar a permanent one, MNVS is demanding that the university follow necessary guidelines in a transparent manner.

“They (university) should officially conduct interviews and then decide who should be the next registrar. If the professors we are talking about are not found to be capable, then we don’t have a problem. But at least follow the required protocol,” he said.

Tamboli further said that the registrar should be someone who can understand students’ problems. Emphasising that their primary contention is that rules must be “adhered to”, Tamboli said that the university has given them an assurance. Otherwise, the “MNVS will protest against it,” he said.

Meanwhile, university Vice-Chancellor Vijay Khole said that he met with MNVS representatives and explained to them that filling up of posts is “never a pre-decided process”.

“There’s a committee which consists of experts and I have always gone by their opinion,” said Khole. He further said he has told MNVS representatives that a formal date for the interview is yet to be decided. “I have full faith in the committee and whatever the experts say, the university will accordingly take an appropriate decision,” added Khole.
