Nigerian pair nabbed for illegal stay in India

New Delhi, February 29 Two foreigners have been arrested by South district police for overstaying in India. According to the police, the two accused including woman claimed that they are Nigerian nationals but could not produce any valid documents pertaining to their visit to India and their motive.

A CBI Sub-Inspector has lodged the FIR since CBI was examining them in a case. A source said, “Their arrest has been from CGO complex and CBI officials are the complainant. They were investigating a cheating case and when found staying illegally here in India, they approached us for the FIR,” said a Delhi Police officer.

The accused persons have been identified as 26-year-old woman Joy and Patra (38). When asked, Joy and Patra could not produce any passport, travel documents and other related documents.

A source said that they were residing in South Delhi area from last few months. Police is interrogating them to know their motive. They have been booked under section 14 of Foreigners Act, 1946 in FIR number 49 at Lodhi Colony police station on Wednesday.

Police officials said that before shifting their base here in Delhi, Patra was residing in Santacruz area while Joy was living in Hotel Venua in Colaba in Mumbai. “Their presence their in Mumbai is also being checked. We are also trying to establish if they have any accomplices here in India,” said a senior police official.

Police officers keeps a strict eye on Nigerian nationals here in India since many of them come to India posing as students or on tourist visas and then sell drugs to the addicts.

The embassy of Nigeria has also reportedly been informed by the police about their illegal stay in India and records are being checked in the FRRO office about their arrival day in India. They have also not been able to tell their relationship with each other, said a source.
