Kolkata, May 13 In an era when most government schemes die a premature death, the Nivedita Nursing Sahayika Kendra, a grassroot placement agency in Hooghly district, is a commendable exception.

The kendra is a small placement agency for nurses who have undergone training under the SGSY scheme.

The agency, set up on March 24, 2008, has tied up with Arogya Niketan, Dr Sur’s Nursing Home, Kanak Nursing Home and many other private nursing homes in and around Chinsurah, a town in the Hooghly district. Within one month of its inception, the agency has been able to place 20 girls.

“Whenever a hospital or a nursing home needs attendants they call the agency, which in turn calls the girls who have registered with them,” said Dola Dey, the member of the kendra. The group of 15, who run the agency, has also decided on an advertisement campaign through banners and posters. The nurses are paid Rs 50-60 per day of which 5 per cent is charged as commission by the agency.

Pondering upon the failure of the first batch(2007) to get job placements, Dola Dey pointed out, “ Now, girls from remote corners of the district like Sankhanagar, Baghati and Noldanga Colony have secured jobs for themselves,”.
